My family has been doing this for years and i can confirm it works. Sometimes if flies are in the house we light peppermint candles!

Peppermint oil repels mice, roaches and flies. When moving into the house I now live in, I didn't know about the mice & roaches. I set out roach bait, glue traps. Then, after 2 weeks, I bought a bag of cotton balls. I saturated the cotton balls with peppermint oil, places them in various areas inside my home. The roach bait killed roaches, the peppermint made the rest of the roaches leave. I caught 10 mice, then the peppermint discouraged any more mice from coming in. It took about 3 months to get rid of all of the. I live in an area notorious for bugs & critters. Have not seen any for 3 years.

My mom grew mint in front of the main entrance to get rid of flies. She grew up in the South and it was an "old wives trick" for keeping mosquitoes away. She'd tell us to keep some mint leaves in our pocket of the skeeters were bad.

Also, if you grow tomatoes or have a small garden, you can use the peppermint oil with a drop of Dawn Dish Soap and a couple cloves of garlic mixed together with water in a spray bottle to spray your plants with... the bugs hate it!

Plants produce oils to defend themselves from bugs and anything that wants to eat them. We enjoy some of the those natural "repellents" in the form of spices and scents. Cinnamon for example. When attached to the tree as bark, it keeps some nasty pests away. It is then harvested and we add it to our foods for taste.

Good tip! 🙂 I dump 1 -2 cups of Cat litter into the bottom of my Garbage can after each weekly Trash pickup.
Cuts the odor & absorbs any liquids that may seep out.

Pro tip!!! Diluted vinegar water with peppermint oil will kill and prevent cockroaches. You need to SWITCH IT UP every now and then though. They get used to things from generation to generation.

Rodents hate Peppermint oil too! I sprinkle it on my engine block from time to time to discourage them from getting cozy and chewing my wiring.

This is great advice, except if cats get essential oils, especially neat, on their fur/paws and lick it, it can be fatal. They are toxic for them.

Thank you so much! I'm having the garbage barrel, and in the house problem, I love peppermint and already have peppermint oil on hand! I'm also going to move that trash barrel away from my garage entry to the house, it needs to stay in the garage due to bears but moving it will help with flies too. Have a great day!

What a great idea.
Another thing Peppermint oil s good for is repelling MICE... they are allergic to peppermint. They avoid it.
Peppermint is also great for colic in babies. REAL PEPPERMINT OUL- NOT ESSENCE....
A few drops in a bottle of water.
REALLY WORKS.

Thank you so much!! I use mint plants in and around my home to repel ants and spiders. My grandparents always had mint growing around their home for that reason.
