I can't count the number of times I've been asked "Is more gears more better?" You see bikes everywhere touting their number of speeds, 10 speed, 27 speed, 24 speed, what does all of that mean and does it really matter? In this bike quick talk we go over how gear ratios work and if you're better off buying that 27 speed bike or should stick with something simpler!

The bicycle industry should consider selling 1x9 or 1x10 setups on their entry level bikes (most still have the double or triple). It is so confusing for beginners. My wife and kids struggle to manage the shifting front and rear, and the concept of chain line is just something a beginner doesn’t want to have to deal with. They jump on my 1x9 bike and love it so much more. I really wish the 1x9 would be more common on the entry level bikes, even the hybrid bike models and such

With a front derailleur (3xsomething) it's faster to change ranges quickly with the terrain. If having only 1xsomething, you'd have to go from end to end through a number of gears.

So does it mean a bigger range with less number of gears is better?
Say I have 7 * 1 gears but a very wide range (custom cassette) at the back. would be better?

I have been running a 1x9 system for a couple of years and I feel like I am still missing gears and top speed. When I wear this bike out I am going back to a bike with a 24 or 27 speed system.

I’ve had an MTB for a couple of years now and feel like I need to switch for a road bike, I am not good at understanding speeds and the like and I found this Maidu 2024 racing bike that has 16 speeds. I wonder if 16 speeds are enough for someone who rides 25km/day 🤔. I would appreciate your advises
