Come on dude. Get a clue into this.

Just like another user commented - automatics have a smaller gear ratio, so it's natural to have higher gears at low speeds. No manual driver would do that because manuals have higher gear ratios and no one likes lugging their engine.

"better" is subjective. More fuel saving vs the best gear ratio for performance and control. There were countless times my old (old to me. still modern autos/dual clutch) auto cars would be gutless exiting bends/ roundabouts because they're at 1.5k RMP.

Also comparing gears as in "im in 6th" is dumb as autos tend to have shorter gear ratios and more gears. Compare RPM and anyone with a brain could hyper mile a manual...but why would

This guy clearly doesn’t know much about manuals

I love driving manual because I love the feel of being able to change gears when I want. I'm not trying to optimize efficiency, I want to feel the car pull

You have to remember that a lot of automatic transmission have 8-10 gears in them these days while most manuals still have 6. If you cruise in 6th constantly at 30 mph in a manual you’re gonna do some serious damage

They also can't see rising/falling gradients ahead. In a manual, you drop a gear as soon as the incline starts. An auto will labour the engine for a second or two before it realises the torque demand is actually a hill.

This is what people say who are not confident with manual

Bold of you to assume. I'm holding 3rd 😂

You underestimate hypermilers. many of them shift earlier then automatics. The first generation Insight guys are typically in 5th gear by 30.

People buy 400 HP cars and drive in an rpm range where you're lucky if it outputs 40, then laugh at our old 180 HP sports cars and wonder how it was ever considered a lot of power.

Just cause you believe people change gear later doesn't mean it's more efficient. The average weight of a automatic box whether it be DCT, E-clutch, torque converter etc are heavier therefore requiring more fuel.

Autos have different gear ratios so doesn’t really matter what gear you are in compared to a manual it doesn’t work like that. Plus autos are actually known for being worse on fuel than manuals

Automatic gearboxes are very expensive to repair when they fail... So whatever pennies you might save on fuel will be peanuts compared to the cost when the thing eventually breaks (unless it's a really good brand and doesn't fail easily). Manual transmission is simple and pretty bullet proof. Clutch might need maintenance at some point.

The number of gears doesn't matter much if your rpm is high while your speed is slow. That's what matters!

Fuel efficiency is about achieving high speeds, thus completing long distances in a very short time while keeping the engine running at low rpm,
Which means it burns less fuel to cover a very long distance.

It depends, the driver who is foreseeing what gonna happen in traffic, thinking and coasting, and know the torque curve of the car can do better mileage, and manual gear coupling is more efficient, so it’s very possible if you drive with your head and experience.

I am driving a manual so long it’s possible, I just love the way of driving a car where you got full control over it.

Ill be in 3rd or 4th as im getting off a roundabout too. You underestimate manual drivers

My Toyota Matrix refuses to shift to fifth until 41, but I can slow down to 35 afterwards and cruise in fifth at a very low RPM.
Though, it's an older auto. My manual 6-speed Altima was very efficient if I shifted early. Bigger engine and 6-8 MPG higher than my Matrix.
I was going to mention that torque converters aren't as efficient as a dry clutch in a manual, but the internet says that the new ones lock up and are very efficient.

Keep in mind that efficiency is sometimes you enemy, all the fuel saving translate to carbon build up, not even gonna tell how it feels to have a trailer hooked to a automatic or how it feels to go on icy roads.

I'm always in the best gear in a manual because that's the gear I choose to be in. I'm driving I decide which gear is appropriate for my needs.
