How to Tell GPS Approaches Apart | LNAV vs LP | WAAS Approach

Have you ever looked at two seemingly identical GPS approaches to the same runway. We'll take a look at two into Sandpoint, Idaho, to look at the difference between an LNAV and LP approach.

I'm a brand new CFI and now working on CFII. Your video is always helpful. Every time I don't understand something, first thing I do is searching through your video.

Good that you mentioned the reference glidepath when WAAS is available. However, pilots must be very careful about following the reference glidepath, which is computed at a 3 degree angle, when the published approach angle is steeper than 3 degrees due to obstacles in the final segment. Also, if you fly the reference glidepath to a runway with a significantly displaced threshold, your 3 degree approach angle will be too low and you may not meet the published fix crossing altitudes. The VASI or PAPI has precedence over all glidepaths, especially below approach minimums.

Awesome video as always, my IFR checkride is coming soon and your vids are giving me way more confidence. Could you make a video on RNP, what it is, how it changes an RNAV, and what you need to fly one? Still something I'm stuck up on, thanks!

Excellent work, again.
Can you please explain the difference between a RNAV and a RNP approach. In Australia we can do RNP approach that will provide (suitably equipped a/c) with vertical and horizontal gnss coupled guidance

I sometimes see LP and LNAV minima on same plate, for example L35 Big Bear CA. Why would anyone use LNAV at higher mda? Is it there in case waas fails? Does a waas receiver, G1000, automatically say lnav+v if waas fails? Will it always choose LP if waas is normal? Will it say LP+V after FAF or before? Thanks great videos!

Not clear on the missed approach procedure. It says on the Z approach that you should climb to 6600 and climb in hold at BILOE to 6600. It also says if you can’t obtain a 318 f/m climb rate you should see Y approach. However Y approach says exactly the same thing! What do they mean?

My airport has an LPV DA category. Also, it shows WAAS CH 58202 W26A in upper left of appr plate. I thought my plane did not have WAAS....maybe it does since I have done shot this approach many times going down to 327' min. For ref, it is RNAV (GPS) Z RWY 26 at CMA. Dang, I should know if my G1000 has WAAS or not eh?

Hello,
One question:
I want to fly in a country that doesn’t have SBAS constellation (like Australia or South America)
If I have a light aircraft equipped with GTN 750 that is SBAS GPS (no Baro-VNAV I think)

Can I fly a RNAV/VNAV approach ? If yes how is the vertical profile is followed ?
