I am not a fan of the "dive and drive" form of non-precision approach. It requires you to constantly reconfigure your aircraft and is not stable. Neither should it be necessary. In Australia all RNAV approaches are runway aligned, or at least within 5 deg or so of a runway. Therefore the runway is going to be in front of you. If you can't see it then you are still in instrument conditions and a missed approach is called for.

CAT I, II & III refer to differing precision approach (ILS) minimums of both cloud height above ground and visibility. CAT I has the highest minimums, CAT III the lowest. II & III are further subdivided into types A & B. CAT III B is virtually blind with cloud (or fog) at ground level and visibility to near zero - essentially an autoland only requirement.

Just want to STRONGLY emphasize some of what has been said below. CDA is the safest way to do an approach. This drop and level drop and level has shown to cause CFIT accidents 8 times higher than following a glide slope or advisory path. Simply crosschec the altitudes to make sure it is accurate.

FYI I am a retired airline pilot with 24, 000 hours and retired as a B777 IP. I won't do an non CDA.

I believe the CAT I II and III are only used for ILS approaches because the CAT is the strength of the localised/glidescope signal used- that's what I believe to be correct- anyone who knows more can hopefully help :-)

I must disagree with your recommendation to “Dive and Drive” the LNAV+V approach. The V is provided to allow the pilot to fly a stabilized approach without having to descend/level/descend/level, etc. The FAA is strongly stressing the use of stabilized approaches at all times. When conducting Instrument Practical Tests, I watch to see how the applicant applies the Advisory Glide Slope. It isn’t “Mandatory” but if not followed, it is discussed in the debriefing regarding the added safety margin gained by being stabilized throughout the descent.

Have a really silly question: When flying the RNAV GPS approach, are your regular VOR receivers synced to the GPS, or are you just flying by GPS?
