Critics wonder whether the construction of Nusantara really is needed or supposed to be the legacy of the outgoing president of Indonesia.

What do you think of this new capital?

Instead of managing? It had been fixed repeatedly but the result still doesn't go well and even the shrinkage of Jakarta's land despite of infiltration well usage, so the capital movement action is exact!

None of the indigenous people will be replaced. Instead, they will be given a free house and compensation for their land. Like a lot of money.

Nothing sustainable about creating a new megalopolis instead of renewing the old one.

Great idea by Indonesia for once, seems like something more practical than say Egypts new capital.

Green city built on destroyed natural jungle

A country's image is significantly tied to its capital so this is probably a 30 billion tourism campaign. The property values in the new city will be too high for most, and there wont be a populace around it to build slums or just unattractive neighbourhoods so when people see it they will assume Indonesia to be a much more well off country that it is, and will be more likely to visit.

I lived in Indonesia for more than 18 years, 6 of them at the city of Jakarta as a US expat. What most people don’t know is that the majority of the population of Indonesia is concentrated in the island of Java where Jakarta is located. 57% of the country’s total population lives in Java while the island’s land area is a mere 7% of the country’s total land area. Compare this to Kalimantan (Borneo) which is 28% of the total land area but with only 5.7% of the total population, 1/10 the population of Java while having 4 times the land area! So I agree with the government’s decision to move the capital to Kalimantan because this will alleviate the environmental stress caused by over population in the island of Java where Jakarta is located. And if anyone is wondering why the population of Indonesia is so concentrated in Java to begin with, I suggest a history lesson in the colonial rule of the Dutch and the policies of the VOC (Dutch East Indies Company)!

We are fed up with the issue of deforestation !!

We want to develop our country for the welfare of our own people.

The issue of deforestation is often heralded by European Union ( EU ) 🇪🇺 to pressure emerging countries which want to progress, even though they themselves 🇪🇺 and their 🇪🇺 ancestors also often carry out deforestation activities.

( Double standards and hypocrisy in the style of western countries 🇪🇺 🇺🇸 🇬🇧 🇦🇺 🇮🇱 🇨🇦 🇧🇷, ... etc )

Why fix problems... just abandoned them and create new one somewhere else...

And when 2045 comes around. Indonesia will find itself back with the same problem. Global warming, the rise of sea water level and saver tropical strom.

I really hope they put in proper waste management systems instead of dumping everything in the river like in Jakarta

I mean the giant seawall that was planned in Jakarta cost 40 billion USD more than this new capital.

Oh no! Where will they dump the indigenous residents this time?

my ass, a friend of mine is working in kalimantan, and the government replace the area of forest in which they use, and re-forestate by planting the new trees on other area, using trees that can grow faster, i bet those activist never know that isn't it. Sure, it's not a perfect replacement of the old one, and it probably never will, but the capital relocations is needed, i think the one who disagree of its relocations is someone whom they will experience more personal disadvantages by the capital relocations. I am more concerned about the new capital development money will be vaporized due to massive corruption. I hope everything related to its development will be open and transparent so all people can monitor it.
