the JR Pass used to be a good option but it has gotten a lot more expensive nowadays. From what I heard it is not recommended anymore.

Its not tourist restaurants but popular restaurants like anywhere. But honestly finding food is the last problem you will have. From convenience stores, to stalls, to vending machines pretty much any hotel you stay in will have a restaurant. I mean the hardest part is finding what not to eat from what is available.

honestly if someone goes to japan i'd recommend them to either bring or buy a folding bike there, gives you a lot of freedom of movement and opens up places to eat

Cabs in Japan "used to be" expensive, not any more. Compared to Uber, it costs only 1/2 or 1/3.

JR Pass is only worth it if you plan to hop multiple cities, If you plan to take one or two trips or treat it as a return ticket, its a waste of money. Also get a Suica/IC Card, you can top it up and use it to buy stuff from convenience stores or take the subway/buses.

Touristy restaurants are not all bad, not all of them are overpriced and low quality, the upside of touristy restaurants is that they offer english menus, the only problem are finding ones that are good and do not charge you for an arm or a leg.

subway and train tix are super affordable. it’s a bit confusing at first but that’s part of the fun. it’s not like in chicago where if you get off the wrong station you might die. so kinda fun to explore different stations and their surroundings.

The JR Pass is also valid for the Yamanote Line, an urban rail that serves several important areas of Tokyo. If you reserve an hotel near this line, you can travel most touristic places with the same pass used for traveling to other cities.

I wouldn’t advise it everywhere but Uber was priced relatively well to America so don’t worry about the stations closing. But traveling in one city on the rails was cheap reliable and a bit fun once you get the map down. Obviously Google maps or Apple Maps will help with that

Get a Pasmo or Suica card. Load them up and use them for the trains (and can be used in convenience stores and maybe other places). Just check the balance at a kiosk and load them up when the balance gets low. And try to know some Japanese when you go. Not everyone speaks English. Signage at the stations and announcements on the trains are made in Japanese and English. A lot of signage is in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean.

Just got back from two weeks in Japan. Cabs are not expensive unless you’re traveling solo. If you’re splitting the cost among 2-4 other people then it’s reasonable as the cost is the same regardless of rider count.

I love "doramas" about Japan.

I believe the JR Rail pass is good for the subways as well as the bullet train. It's only a good value if you plan to travel between cities 3 or more times. Just to go from from one city to another during the week the pass is valid would be more expensive than taking a plane.

Cabs in Japan are ridiculously cheaper than in Australia.

I would rather buy a Suica Card. I have one and it’s super convenient since you can also pay in a lot of restaurants and shops. Other than that: walk, walk, walk. You’d be surprised what little gems you find on the way + you get incredible fit in just 1-2 weeks

Pachinko machines are so cool and gun though 😊

The ticket you showed was not a Japanese Rail Pass. The pass is passport sized. I always buy a jail pass when travelling around Japan. I used mine on some short ferry routes and some trams too. It's great value.

you cannot achieve perfection, only the pursuit towards it and Japan is the best

I mean taxis are expensive but they are not really more expensive than nyc cabs so if you come from a major city in U.S. or UK taxi price is probably gonna be similar to your home city.
