4. Always use secure boot where possible. This makes sure that only signed EFI modules will load and kernel tampering would be impossible. (If the root kit is in the BIOS then completely rewrite it and reinstall Windows.)

How do you stop it?
1. Unplug the power.
2. Take the server out.
3. Shred the whole server.
4. Mount your new server.
5. Pull out your backup.
6. Done.

generally if you suspect your pc has some sort of root kit Id say backup any pictures or generally sensitive data and re-install your OS, redownload any apps you may need and make sure to get them from official sources

The thing most of these movies don't realize is that detecting the malware itself is most of the work, once you know what you're dealing with (especially if you have access to the hardware), it's trivial to get rid of.

I'm going to do you a solid:

1. always make a backup

2. if your instincts tell you somethings off, and you lack the knowledge or the tools to find it (i.e. wireshark experience, and engineering grade process and memory analyzers..) format your harddrive — no matter how embedded the rootkit is, formatting will wipe it.

3. Shutdown and unplug PC from wall or laptop remove battery for 30sec-1min just to make sure we cleared memory.

4. Now begin reconfig

You know how you get rid of a rootkit? Reimage your computer every couple months, wipe it clean. Install your OS from scratch. Put your files in some sort of media and do a deep scan of that. It takes me around the same ammount of time than doing laundry. Stay safe out there
