Even a pad of paper and a pen would have been better than nothing.

When I worked in a hospital, emergency room, we dealt with heart of hearing and deaf patients several times, and if we couldn’t find the interpreter machine, we would do everything we could: write notes, show them the medication before we gave it to them, pointed to medication list that were on file and asked if they were still taking it or if that allergy was correct, and practiced a lot of patience and compassion. In all my life, I have personally never encountered a situation in which a deaf person was mistreated, but if I ever did, you bet I’d be acting like that redhead

As a nurse this whole scenario os absolutely frustrating bc of how absolutely ridiculous the nurse is acting. Nurses are often the ones who advocate for their patients and go to great lengths to protect their patients. And would have given her a pen and paper. Clearly the writers have no clue about what nurses ACTUALLY do. Its this BS portrayal that makes nurses look stupid. 😡

Can't blame the Nurse, HOSPITAL'S AT FAULT. But the Nurse could have been more sympathetic of the situation.

The moment they figured out she's deaf, a notepad and a pen should've been handed to her. Neither did anyone do that, nor did she seem to have requested it?? Both parties are kinds dumb here...And before someone goes all FLAME ON on my behind, I've had surgery on my throut, all I had to do afterwards, was GESTURING WRITING with a pen and immediatly I got what I needed.
Are you telling me she needed an interpreter for that too??

It doesn't really matter that all of that stuff isn't available to her right now it's the fact that this nurse is not using basic common sense. Like if they can deduce the concept that she is deaf they should be able to figure out if she can write in red lips along with the concept of possibly using a computer or something to type out what the fuck she needs.

it should recommended for especially doctors and nurses, along with any medical field to learn sign language.

There's literally on call interpretation services. We had to use one during court for my native Spanish speaker husband. The service covers ASL, Spanish, French, English, legal and medical jargon, etc. It is not the responsibility of the nurse who is already overloaded. This is on the patient and hospital administration. You know you need interpretation services, set them up and have them listed as an emergency contact. Keep their card on you and their number saved on your phone's lock screen. You all want immigrants to do this, it should be just as expected for natural born citizens with birth defects. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I know this will sound terrible, but she is concious. Can she read? Nod her head? Did they try writing questions? And to her panicked friend, what if she had been unconscious? Or a small child? Or spoke a rare language? There are many reasons why hospital staff are not able to communicate with patients. They do the best they can.
