It was genius.

Maul thought Obi Wan would try to defeat him using Qui Gons technique as a way to pay respects to his master, and had calculated the way to kill him on those specific terms. He was so laser focused oh the mind game that he didn't realize Kenobi was playing a step ahead. This is a REAL duel. It lacks the flash but packs a harder punch.

Prequel fights were novice battles, THIS is how a master fights.
