This image describes so well what sort of characters we’ve got in the show and what’s their mental state.

As Kaworu is totally in the moment, Rei seems to be overlooking the situation and is rather passive and observing. Asuka on the other hand is looking at us, checking if we pay attention to her, because that’s what she wants: to be seen.
Shinji, playing the Cello, to which some people would say it’s not that important. But without it the music would be incomplete. It wouldn’t have the depth it has. He is looking to the ground, since he doesn’t know where else to look.
All of them are unique in their very own way. All of them make the piece a masterpiece. And same goes for Evangelion itself.

And there is one message this anime conveys: nobody is perfect. And neither is the world. But we all try our best. And that’s what’s makes us human. Our emotions, our flaws, our indecisiveness.

Because we can't escape who we are no matter how hard we try, we are often desperate to get "better" no matter what. But once we forced ourselfs to become someone, we are truly not, it always comes back to our own, individual decisions: do I want to be myself, with my flaws, and everything that is part of me and accept that, or do I want to force myself into trying to be perfect, knowing that I will never succeed.
What instrumentality offered was for everyone to become part of one big entity. To erase each other’s flaws and be „perfect“. But that necessarily means giving up what makes you human. And that’s why it should be everyone’s individual decision, if they want to become part of what instrumentality is or remaining as an individual.
