A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician explains in simple terms how the inverter with converter assembly work in Toyota Hybrids.

In this brand new series I will go over all components of the hybrid system explaining their basic function in a simple way that's easy to understand. The theme of this series is simple but complicated.

The hybrid system in Toyota cars is super complicated and a marvel of engineering. In this series I try to keep things simple and light so Toyota Hybrid owners can see how their cars work.

I believe if you know how your car works you'll be able to utilize all it's features better and better understand your hybrid Toyota.

In this part of the series I will be covering the true heart of the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive! The inverter with converter assembly which controls boosting the high voltage battery voltage, Changing it from D\C to A\C and also I'll explain how hybrids don't have an alternator and how does it charge the 12v battery.

Small note. Some hybrid cooling systems runs the coolant inside the hybrid transmission as well. In this video I was generally talking about the cooling system in regards to the inverter with converter assembly.

Really enjoy your videos. I’m a 66 year old doctor, been driving cars for 45 years, but it’s only through your videos I’ve developed an interest for the technology that goes into making cars work. You’re a born teacher! Bless you.

I think this video helped me understand why, possibly, my 2006 Accord Hybrid went "dark" while I was cruising at 70MPH in the middle of five lanes on the highway; perhaps the inverter converter overheated (?) but I'll never know it ... Everything shut down but I was able to coast to the infamous side of the road and wait for the towing truck. Took it home and trickle charged the 12v battery, then the car started again. It never happened again for the few months I kept the car after that event. It had 285, 000 miles with the original hybrid battery. I drove that car 210, 000 + of those 285k miles. Great video, sir, and may God bless you and your family.

Thanks for explaining this tech. I just picked up a 2021 Venza Hybrid today. In just one day of driving I found the technology amazing.

Southern Calif bought a new 2017 Toyota Camry SE Hybrid. No problem works like a charm driving around the beach cities.. Changed the full synthetic oil and filters and rotated the tires at 6, 000 miles. Notice that other owners who respond to Consumers Reports surveys ll say the same thing about their 2017 hybrid being problem free.

I'm PC tech (or used to be PC tech), but that's pretty cool to learn that inverter basically has a hot CPU with liquid cooling system!

This thing only went mainstream with PC people like me less than a decade ago, yet Toyota has been doing it all along!

Pretty cool stuff! In my mind car manufacturers were old fashioned and using outdated tech and outdated cooling methods. Nope.

CCN, very informative, thank you. Electricity is so incredibly adaptable, never ceases to amaze me. Some gas furnaces I used to work with have a 3-phase AC draft inducer motor but the furnace is powered with single phase AC. The electronic control produces the 3-phase current allowing the motor to ramp its speed up and down as the combustion process requires. Unbelievable! Compared to the old pilot burner belt drive models of yesteryear, its like working on a spaceship. I’m picking-up my RAV4 hybrid later this week, I’ll be sure to leave the electronics to the pros. Thanks again.
