Just commenting to say that 5 years later you just saved me a TON of time with this video. I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out a way to effective rank a price list based on part # and still return the ancillary data (item description, vendor, manufacturer, etc.). This solves my problem perfectly.

THANK YOU!

You nailed this lesson Ruth. I love that you explain functions and acknowledge the importance of understanding how they work and why. As a user I appreciate your ability to teach and not just show viewers how to copy you. Understanding leads to growth. Thanks!!

@Ruth, I have a nice addition to this trick i think. I was using it to get the subgroup index for a key, but this index had to be sorted differently.
If you do a normal indexing operation you will see it uses your sorted table. Sorting the other way around basically changes the index process.
However, the intermediate grouping cancels this and it will resort based on the columns left to right. In order to fix this: put the column you want to sort on at the far left end of your table, and then sort it, group it, and do the trick as explained. Using this method you can sub-index groups the other way around :)

This was SO helpful, I've been pulling my hair out for days trying to figure out how to optimize a report I'm fixing, and couldn't figure out a way to create custom columns without creating a duplicate table that i can group. Thank you!

This is brilliant thanks so much.
I actually used this same trick to add index to the records from a file when combining files from folders.
When you combine multiple files from a folder and you want the index per file instead index by full data set.

Brilliant thanks.
