There’s so much dialogue from Reiner and Bertoldt is season 1 that doesn’t make any sense until you know they are titans. It’s actually crazy on rewatch

The casual reveal in the background of Reiner and Bertolt is a stroke of pure genius from Isayama. Nothing grand but the impact is still felt. I still revisit that scene every now and then.

17:30 Reiner was explored pretty well in Season 1, with his character being showcased as the dependable protector brotherly figure in how he helped Armin by carrying his weight during training or how he guided Eren to even fighting Female titan to save Armin, even though it was an act but we didn't knew that yet. So Reiner was setup pretty well in S1 and that's why the reveal hits all the sweet spots in S2. So this point might hold true for Bertholdt but not true for Reiner at all.

17:19 the Bertolt sleep position criticism is fair, but go back and watch and you will see the breadcrumbs, especially with Reiner. Reiner played a pretty big role in the training arc, and in the expedition to expose the traitor (Annie).

Erens moms death and the reiner betrayal scenes have the 2 best songs in all of anime imo.

AoT more than a lot of other shows and series really benefits from breaking away from the notion of seasons and taking it as one whole story. Things set up in season 1 were still being paid off and referenced into season 4. S2 and S3 especially benefit from being combined as they together make up the "mid point" of the series.
