For those wondering why the waters around California are dark or murky!

The upwelling and the Alaskan cold water that occurs along the coast makes the water cold for California. This is very beneficial for plankton growth. Google says an “increase in the amount of daylight and an influx of nutrients from winter upwelling and snow/ice melt runoff are catalysts for phytoplankton blooms. Microscopic photosynthetic organisms, phytoplankton are responsible for making our bays appear to be dark and murky.”

Why is California ocean water not clear?

The other cause for turbidity (the cloudiness or haziness of a fluid caused by large numbers of individual particles that are generally invisible to the naked eye, similar to smoke in air) is living organic material in the water; it is also an important reason that California water is less clear than Hawaiian or Bahamian waters. The waters off California typically have much more phytoplankton and chlorophyll, and therefore are more turbid, than in Hawaii or the Bahamas.

The cold water is also why California doesn't have much humidity, or warm rainstorms.

Because the Pacific Ocean is the Largest and Deepest body of water on Earth. it's impossible for light and heat to penetrate at such Depth.... No matter how hot the temperature is, the depths of the Ocean will keep it

Thanks to the upwelling that occurs along the coast of California, the water is pretty cold. This is also beneficial for plankton growth, which is why some are complaining about the murkiness of the water.

Mid august through mid October, in the early morning or evenings is the best time to get in the water here in so cal. I fish the coast year round so I can say it from experience. 🤙

Why is the water so cold...it's the ocean...trillions of gallons of water doesn't heat up overnight. When I went boogie-boarding by the Seal Beach Pier in the1970's we were so glad that all that power generation water was discharged nearby. It made the water temps almost 62 sometimes! I would ride my bike from a few miles away (probably10 or more) with my boogie board under one arm and ride those waves by the pier. But all the other beaches we surfed at never had water that warm. I live in Texas now and my pool water is over 90 degrees for months at a time. I miss that 62 degree ocean water...

SoCal water is warm in the Summer. Now if you go up to the coast to the Bay Area beaches in Nor Cal, that's when you feel the chill, even in the Summer.
