As a kid, being able to play as a girl character was SUCH a huge deal. I remember how excited I was to play Crystal because of that being added. For that reason alone, Crystal is the best version to me.

Crystal version along with Gold version hold a special place in my heart since they were my first Pokèmon games as a kid. Sure they are not perfect and the level curve is quite atrocious, i would say that i had a lot of fun with it back then and also are the reason why i learned English in the first place.

Yeah no Ampharos line really hurts Crystal, i dont understand why they would take the best electric type in the game and one of the few 3 stage johto lines out of the game, its just whack lol

Honestly, best way to play Crystal nowadays, is this one romhack called Crystal Legacy: Basically the same game but made things more balanced and added quite a few extras to it.

I feel the same about this one. Crystal is technically better than Gold and Silver, but not by much if you're just playing for fun. Gold and Silver are still awesome to play and you wouldn't be missing much if you didn't have Crystal unless your goal is to build the absolute best Gen 2 team you possibly can and you don't have access to certain Gen 1 elements from the original games. The Move Tutor in Crystal is essential to doing this since Thunderbolt, Ice Beam and Flamethrower are nearly impossible to get without the Tutor around. The Odd Egg is also really cool to duplicate for a Crystal playthrough to get all the shiny Pokémon that hatch from it if you're savvy with the Pokémon storage box duplication glitch in the Gen 2 games. This is also helpful for completing the Pokedex if that's one of your goals. Certain Evolution Stones are also REALLY hard to get in Gen 2, but Crystal presents more opportunities to get them from certain Trainers you add to your phone list. Other than that and the minor story changes though, Crystal won't give you much more to work with compared to the cheaper Gold and Silver games.

For me, it's the opposite. If strapped for time or money, I wouldn't recommend someone plays both GS and Crystal, as most of the changes are just more content and aesthetics. On the contrary, I could recommend people play both Ruby (but not Sapphire) AND Emerald. The reason being, the story changes enough in Emerald, Team Magma gets a new hideout in a new dungeon, there's more of Team Magma (they appear in Petalburg Woods and even own the Lilycove Hideout same as in Sapphire). Other than that, many abbilities get out-of-battle effects and Pokéblock berries get EV-reducing functions in Emerald they didn't habe in RS or FR LG.

I started playing Pokemon games with Scarlet, but came back to older games starting with Crystal, because it was a) one of the first emulators came across, and b) I figured I should just go for the one that combined the other two and made any small changes the games needed

Yes the Odd egg had even higher shiny odds in the Japanese versions,
but it was AN EVENT DISTRIBUTION. Pretty notable distinction IMO, as it brings into question whether it is actually meant to be part of a typical playthrough experience.

Notbeing able to get a mareep in this game near the miltank farm is the ultimate betrayal I felt in this game, wanted to chuck a masterball on the trainer with a flaafy lol

Gold was the version I played as a kid so it'll always be my favorite. I had thought crystal had all the pokemon but now that i k ow it doesnt, Gold is hands down my favorite.
