The mysterious case of the missing circlip and grommet - BSA Gold Star 650

A quick DIY on how to improve the mating of my airbox side panel.

In my case the rubber grommet on the side panel was damaged through uneven removal..?

The pin shown had no circlip or rubber grommet. So here is how I added it, to improve the overall stability of the airbox side panel in my mind. It’s super easy to do and I even gave out a cry of "success" after fitting the panel back on, it felt great!

An official response from BSA obtained by (lumpycarbs): “Not all pillars require this, the round grommets with the clips are there to hold the airbox bracket and the oil tank to the frame. It hasn't been missed, it isn’t needed and they don't have any bearing on the fitment of the outer panel. Side panels when fitted correctly have not been an issue. There has been some torn gromets noticed on the actual side panel itself. This is worth inspecting for, try to make sure panels are removed evenly.”

So remove your panels evenly folks. Never unevenly!

Part numbers are below if you would also like to make this modification.

Side Panel RUBBER GROMMET T13010B10080N

Chassis CIRCLIP E TYPE 9X1.1 PH SF0603008

Well done, proper solution. Lukas gave me the same story when I complained about the apparently missing grommet. I put a plastic hose fitting on to get a more secure fit. BTW I love my gold star, hopefully the support will improve.

Have you thought of doing a video about how to lock the other panel? Right now, anyone can take it off and open the seat.... cheers 😊

If the criclip sits into the groove, then does it actually need the rubber washer behind it?

Where is the retainer/lock/screw to stop the (unfortunately) light fingered scum removing these in 3 seconds a side ?
Poor security that.
That is just a missing production item I'm sure whatever BSA say

Definitely a Friday afternoon bike. And a bad design. The Bonneville is the opposite, pins moulded into side panels and grommets on frame.

Cheap plastic covers .
Not a good ad.
Even my little low priced 350 Enfield classic has key opening steel side covers.
