Cancer is caused by changes to DNA. Most cancer-causing DNA changes occur in sections of DNA called genes. Genetic changes can be inherited, they can be caused by certain exposures, or they can happen when errors occur as cells divide. Cancer-causing genetic changes usually accumulate as we age.

About the “What is Cancer?" Video Series:
Cancer is not one disease, but a collection of related diseases that can occur almost anywhere in the body. At its most basic, cancer is a disease of the genes in the cells of our body. Genes control the way our cells work. But, changes to these genes can cause cells to malfunction, causing them to grow and divide when they should not—or preventing them from dying when they should. These abnormal cells can become cancer.

This video series by the National Cancer Institute breaks these concepts down into bite-sized, sharable animations. Please like, share, embed, and subscribe.

Poor lifestyles like bad diet smoking or excessive alcohol use can also cause it.

They have found cancer in Egyptian mummies so you can’t say it’s a product of the industrial age. Pro athletes get cancer so you can’t say it’s from no exercise. Yes there is a link between smoking and lung cancer but all the other cancers? We’ll never know.
