Been tuning in and out of the podcast while in the hospital with my newborn and saw I won a snark! Thanks Phil! This is truly a memorable Father’s Day!

I have a 59 Epi and I think it’s a fine guitar. And I have both MIM and Made in USA strats and I play them all. Quality and playability on mine are just fine. That being said, I’ve had all of them touched by my luthier buddy who has made them all better with minor adjustments and for not a lot of money.

There have been so many lower-priced brands becoming established in recent years that the whole student-grade environment has changed. This provides an evolutionary opportunity for Epiphone and even Squier to occupy the underused niche that is above entry level. In addition to being a more profitable category, all other things being equal, it allows Epiphone to recapture the prestige it had in, say, the Beatle era.

Charvel, Schecter, and MIM fenders are my purchase decisions. I am extremely pleased at the price points. That said, prestige Japan Ibanez are perfection, but you pay for it.

Good advice, not to stop playing when you have kids. I did stop. 45 years later, kids out of the house and me needing a hobby when I retired, I started in again. No more Pipeline and Walk Don't Run; now it's Mississippi John Hurt and similar. The kids picked up music on their own, but I bet I could have made it more natural for them if they saw me playing when they were growing up.

Just got an Epiphone LP Adam Jones Art Collection guitar and it's fantastic. Glad to see them doing some high-end features like brand name pickups, Gibson construction techniques and better components.

"If your strings last longer, your frets won't." Except in the case of coated ones. A thin layer of plastic that keeps your oil from getting between the windings doesn't make the string any harder. But for the stainless steel ones vs nickel and monel, that's absolutely true. Harder materials = more fret wear.

My favorite must have pedal for a blues junior is a Xotic EP booster. If the amp was on the EP was on all the time no matter the other pedals I had in the chain. It’s hard to describe, it just made the amp sound better, a little warmer, fuller sound.

I think a couple of things are happening. Lot of competition from the cheap Amazon brands that makes it less desirable to sell inexpensive guitars and the PRS effect. PRS starts at the mid grade level with their SE line which are phenomenal guitars and doesn't dip into the low end market helping to preserve their brand loyalty.

Had an Epiphone El Capitan bass for years, an Allen Woody bass, and now have a gold Uptown Kat guitar. They were all great from the 700ish pricepoint new with HSC.

Had a budget acoustic amp and guitar with HSC and enjoyed it. Never had much of a problem with Epiphone.

In the past six months I’ve bought an Epi 335 and a TV Yellow LP Special, both new, and they’re both very much on par with my MIM Fenders. At the macro level they’re vibing me just like the Fenders, great mid-level renditions of my heart’s desires without needing to be a dentist.

Glad to hear your take on Sire guitars. I just bought a used V7 Marcus Miler bass and I’ve been impressed with it.

I've been a Gibson player for 30 years, but Epiphone has been putting out pro-level instruments lately. I'm lucky enough to own 3 of the "Inspired by Gibson" Les Pauls. They're great guitars.

The difference re: Epiphone and Squier is that a $400-$500 Squier is a great guitar while a $400-$500 Epi is okay at best. Epiphone has really poured their energies into the higher priced models.

Some of the new Epiphones may be expensive, but they are spaced out like a Gibson. The AJ models are outstanding with great pickups, tuners, and electronics, and hard shell case. My AJ is right there with my American Strat. Of course they have different tones, but fit and finish, components, and playability are equal. I don’t own a Gibson, but I have played several which did now wow me like my AJ and American have. I also would lump my Squier Deluxe Jazzmaster as an unexplainable amazing guitar as well. 3 different brands, 3 different sounds, 3 different price points, and all 3 are amazing.

I had the chance to try an Epiphone J45. It's better than any Gibson J45 I've ever played. Epiphone is penetrating the mid-range market with great success - now comparable to Yamaha.

Hey Phil. Yes, I feel like the higher-end Epiphones are along the lines of Fender’s Player series. I’d play my Epi LP Standard anytime just as proudly as a Fender Player. Both brands are quite good.

"Black ass G" That's how closed captions spelled out Black SG, and I like it!

all i can say is, that epiphone improved over the last 20 years a lot, the last 10 years their quality is sensationell. Much better than Gibson USA. My no.1 Guitar is an epiphone at the moment under 800 Euros.
