Is a $200 Epiphone Worth It?

What can $200 get you from the lovely lads at Epiphone? One thing is an SG. A vintage inspired looking SG. An SG called the Special VE (Vintage Edition) While you want to look cool on stage, you also want your instrument to be in playing shape for the studio and practicing But you can't possibly get that in this price range, certainly not.

Or can you?

I ordered one a few days ago in cherry red. I already have a G310 (among others) back at home that I was given in 1998. Looking forward to playing it. I am not a beginner but I think Epiphone SGs are among the best guitars in terms of value for money.

I got one 3 years ago for an impulse by. I love it. I replaced the input jack, added a capacitor on the tone pot and replaced the machine heads. Also my fret board is dark, dark not light as the one I see in the reviews.

Any of these two hundred dollar Epis or Squiers can be a good mod project. They have good bones to them, it's just the cheap pickups and hardware that makes them not as good as they could be.

I bought one !! Cherry finish and I love it !! The look, feel and the sound is great. For $200 bucks not a bad decision. 👍

Usually, I prefer bridge selection for rhythm distortion, but that middle position sounds angry. I like it!

I actually bought one the other day. And I am no beginner. My main guitar is a Schecter S1 elite that I threw a DiMarzio super distortion in the bridge.
I’m still going to use the Schecter as my main guitar but the SG it’s definitely gonna be my back up. I really like it.

Picked one up 2 days ago. Granted, still in the honeymoon phase, but so far I love it. Yes, there were cost cutting measures. Don’t care. It’s a cheap guitar. It stays in tune (so far). It is lighter than I thought a solid body could be. The frets were better than many guitars for 5x the price, but don’t care, I bought it for slide. The pickups aren’t my thing necessarily, but I bought it for distorted slide, and they work great for that. For $200 (or negative $20 on a trade in) what’s not to love? Almost makes this 30 year Fender guy want to buy a Gibson…

Nice review. It seems like the more you review guitars, the more guitars I seem to add to my collection. I’m starting to review my guitar collection so hopefully I can return the favor and we both can continue buying more guitars. 👍🏼🤘🏽🎸

Our SG looks really nice. Note it's a good idea to pick up a suede strap 'cause SG's have neck dive. ouch!. also a j style right angle guitar cable is a good investment. one bump and boom - The jack goes out - mine did. yep. I hate that.
Time to bust out the soldering gun. Very lightweight guitar. pelham blue ones seem to have a slightly concave neck.

I like the black satin finish on these. A respectable beginner guitar for $200, but also not my favorite $200 guitar.

My parents bought me this as my first guitar back in 2013, the Guitar Center in Fairfax VA sold it to my parents even though the neck joint was fucked up. I saw the guy try to screw the neck joint back together, but I thought it was just a calibration. We went back to my country and I only realized then that the actual wood in the neck joint had broken. I put in some elbow grease, wood filler, a few screw plugs and a little piece of a library card to give it the correct neck angle; learned how to calibrate it on youtube videos and has been an amazing guitar ever since. Extremely stable tuning, I think I would tune it just a few times after putting on new strings and then about once a month. Very acoustically resonant guitar, something that surprised me but that apparently is a characteristic of SG guitars. The fretwork was flawless from factory (rare) but there were obvious flaws in the way it was painted and finished. I see that the new ones coming out don't have those flaws but there are complaints of the fretwork being half-assed. The tuning heads were fine on my guitar but most other Special VE's were a nightmare.

I definitely recommend this guitar for anyone looking for a beater/sleeper guitar they can modify and manipulate without affecting the resale value (which is close to $0, I wouldn't buy any one of these guitars second hand).

650R = Rhythm
650T = Treble
Epi's way of saying Neck and Bridge. Goes along with the switch label.Standard Epi Humbuckers.
Nice, simple video. Great guitar.

I don't have any complaints for the cost. I had a Gibson SG and while yes the Gibson sounds 100 times better it was a 2000. Dollar guitar. But as things go we needed some cash and were able to do a sell/ trade so I got the cash I needed and I got a budget SG from Epiphone now. Do I miss the green goblin yes I do, but we have a roof over our heads and I have made some adjustments to the Epiphone to take it up a notch. It will never be the Gibson I had once upon a time, but for the cost and fairly inexpensive mods the Black Beauty is pretty close. Note: I did let the kids name them so we went all over the place there, easiest way to get them into guitars is let them name one😮😂. But this Epiphone is really good for a budget guitar, it is a good starter. Some people don't like the bolt on neck, I tend to like it as I have had a guitar neck break and if I didn't have a bolt on we would have been replacing the whole guitar vs the neck and head piece replacement parts.
