How to Grow Mint from Cutting | Root and Propagate Mint in Water

Mint is one of the easiest herbs to grow from a cutting. There are two ways to grow mint from a cutting, first from a stem and second from the root. When growing mint in-ground, be very careful of where you plant mint because mint grows like a weed and it will take over your garden. To get started on growing mint from the stem, choose a stem that is at least 4 to 6 inches long with at least 3 to 4 sets of leaves. Get some pruning shears and cut the stem. Make sure the stem you choose is not flowering or going to seed. Remove all the leaves from bottom part of the steam leaving only four leaves on top. Put the cutting of mint stem in water. Place the mint cutting in a window that receives plenty of sun. Make sure to change water every 3 to 4 days. After 2 weeks, the mint cutting develops really nice set of roots. Dig a hole in a pot containing potting soil and place the newly rooted mint stem in the hole. Cover the mint plant with soil and pack the soil down around the plant. Water the plant and the newly established mint plant is ready to grow.

I noticed this method the first time I put some mint stems as filter for my fish pond and I've been selling dozens of mint pots right now. Quite successful bussiness I think as this is my first time running bussiness on my own

Look at those roots after being two weeks in water! Mint is a great plant and easy to grow as you mentioned. I enjoy doing infused water with mint, lemon and cucumber. New sub!

I didn't check for pests. There was a caterpillar hiding under the leaf that ate everything and pooped in the water.

Whew! You're going to have tons of mint! Sadly I planted mint in the yard here and now we're moving. It's too late in the season to dig up plants so I'll have to wait until next year for mint.
Hope your mint bed is all filled out & looking beautiful! You're going to have to show us the bed in a few weeks.

Got a small spearmint plant growing wild out back. Pretty sure it originated with the huge spearmint fields on the end of town, one of Wrigley's biggest suppliers. Going to take a cutting tomorrow and see if I can get it to root, and then make it a companion plant for one of our potted spider plants.
