If only every student had a teacher like this guy

That would be great - _if_ math was taught as problem solving, and not some rote procedure intended only to survive the next test.

The problem is still the school system then. They literally don’t teach people anything it’s about remembering things for tests.

My friends and I concluded that us finding creative ways to cheat on a test is helping us problem solve. So, in theory, we are learning how to solve problems and building teamwork since it is usually done in groups.

This was never explained to me at school. It's such an important thing that ought to be told to students from day 1

Yes, that's what our math teacher in high school told us when we asked her what's the point of studying math? She simply said it will help you organize your thoughts and teach you how to solve problems in life, it's an exercise to the brain. And it was really helpful and make sense. And that was about more than 15 years ago.

Love that he explained it this way. I was definitely one of those kids in school. But as I grew up, ive seen it as a great way to challenge the brain

This would be completely right if this was actually how math was taught.

I like this response to it that saying however, I feel he's giving a lot of credit to the education system

My advanced calculus teached told us the same exact thing when we asked him what is the point of this if we never have to use it in our work/daily lives. After this I never looked at math the same way- it was never about learning the formulas, it was about training your brain to look for solutions of problems when you face them...

Imagine having Neil as your teacher. You would beg summer break to be over just so you could go back to school to learn stuff the GOOD WAY. Teachers and those who write curriculums need to watch Neil's way of teaching - and the world would be a lot smarter then.

I got someone else to pass my college algebra for me and now I’m a manager at my own business. He’s right kids.

I really needed to hear this! I'm a non traditional student in my mid 50s and I'm in my last course for my degree. This is not the math I was taught in the 70s and 80s. I have found that math is more than numbers, but critical thinking. It serves a purpose in all areas of my life. I'm grateful for changing the mind to the modern concepts of mathematics! 🤔🙄😯

As an electrician, learning many, many mathematical formulas in high school and in college, has absolutley helped me in my career to become the electrician I am today

I began noticing at calc 2 level that I was approaching problems from a much more organized and analytical manner. I’ve since forgotten most of the actual math but I definitely think that analytical framework has largely remained. Math is cool!

Physics for me was/is the marriage of all I studied in school. Every day I stand in awe of physics.

Maybe if teachers actually explain stuff like this to their students then they would understand why it's important to do the work.

Like it’s with all other languages, Maths is just another language of communicating and associating with the world. It’s succinct, formalised and has a universal idiom to it. It’s the language of the cosmos.

Correct, I was taught how to cheat very well, thank you for telling me
