My definition is usually a "bonfire" system, a punishment for death, and a large focus on boss fights. So of course something like Hollow Knight is a Souls-like but Wukong isn't.

Open world game with exploration and hard enemy as the main point with bonfire system that respawn enemy, thats the core i think, losing point when dying is just extra touch

The big thing about souls like is that you are the underdog in a dangerous world trying to kill you, with very few friendly faces helping you, while you must have perseverance to succeed.

Bonfire system that respawns enemies, unlocking shortcuts, tough boss fights that require repetition to memorize highly choreographed fights. It’s a souls like game, the UI is even identical. Demon Souls invented this formula, find me an RPG before demon souls that played like this. Game could’ve been Nioh 3 and I wouldn’t have questioned it for a second.

I feel like people are forgetting that the genre name is "Souls-like" is "like" the souls saga just with their own special sauce to make it a little different. They are not Soul-exact or Soul-copy, so is natural to have deviations.

For me Soulslike is all about the combat. Any other criteria is meaningless. Punishment on death? So Borderlands, Terraria, Shovel Knight, and countless others.

Hmm... It falls under a similar vein do Darksiders 3. A beat em up/ hack and slash like game with souls like mechanics, but far less punishing. How much backtracking is there? Do you get a new ability and travel back to a location and explore more? If so it could fall under Metroidvania
