It's one of the best shows I've ever seen. Definitely the best show of the decade in my opinion.

Shooting chronologically is actually pretty common in Asian productions. It's much more immersive for the actors. Hollywood movies often shoot out of sequence for logistical reasons.

This was a story of personal sacrifice that saves many. A conflict of wit, not braun; a very timely message. What a fantastic series.

I agree, they did a phenomenal job. I read the book for the first time last summer, I wasn't even aware they were producing this until a month or two after I finished. I knew with the run time that it was going to be abridged considerably, the book is over 1400 pages.
The biggest difference beyond the Blackthorn focus of the book being eschewed to focus more on Toranaga, and a more in-depth look at some of the other main players. They did manage to present characters doing the same thing as they did in the book, but giving them a different feel. Yabo was a far more likable character. Ochiba, who fit more in the "Dragon Lady" trope in the book was presented as being just as capable, while being far more sympathetic.
I was disappointed with how they handled Blackthorn's attempted seppuku. In the book is happened much earlier, and was a pivotal point in the story and in Blackthorn's arc. I understand why they did it, it would have clashed with the story as they were telling it. I kinda wish they just left it out completely.

They really need to give Sanada power to do a handful of these one-season historical series about different feudal Japanese leaders/eras. Such great entertainment and he has been one of my top five favorite actors for 20 years…ever since The Last Samurai

I was disappointed that the battle of Sekigahara was passover and not shown 8.5/10

Other than getting a season 2 or adaptation of Clavell's other books, I really hope we get a physical media release for this show.

Wish it had ended up going somewhere. Beautiful show that ended with an info dump and a bunch of stuff explained to have happened offscreen after the fact.

I’ve really enjoyed it and it’s been a while since I’ve been eager to watch the next episode. Finished episode 10 this morning and it works so well.

I am jealous even, Japaneses culture is so influential it reaches every corner of the world - while I want a story of Karl XII, before our culture is completely forgotten!

Loved the 2024 remake of the Shogun. Hiroyuki Sanada was great as Lord Toranaga, as was Fumi Nikaido as Lady Ochiba and Anna Kawaii was good as Lady Mariko. I felt Cosmo was fine as John Blackthorne. The main cast was well complimented by strong performances from Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige, Tokuma Nishioka as Toda "Iron Fist" Hiromatsu and Moeka Yoshi as Usami Fuji. The outstanding cinematography, editing and production design - especially costume design, were feature film quality. The cinematography was bit muted in a few scenes and the pacing a tad slow in the middle. However, those are minor issues and didn’t not detract from what was a gripping series and is certainly the best of 2024. As someone who has read James Clavell’s novel and seen and love the 1980 miniseries, I Highly recommend the 2024 remake.
