How to read: 1 inch — 1/8 of an inch & so on — 1/4 — 3/8 — 1/2 (middle) — 5/8 — 3/4 — 7/8 (small lines in between)

Each small notch line represents 1/8 of an inch this is called the Imperial measurement system. The metric system uses decimal points but it is NOT used in Imperial measurements, that maybe where there is some confusion. In one inch you have 1/8, 2/8, 3/8 4/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 8/8. At points 2/8 4/8 6/8 both top and bottom can be divided by 2 using fractions so becomes 1/4, 1/2, 3/4. 8 notches equals 1 inch.
