Archaeologists from the INAH have discovered an ancient map carved into a volcanic rock in Colima, Mexico, which could be more than 2,000 years old.

It is carved onto the face of a 1.7 metre or 5.77 foot high chunk of basalt, a fine grained extrusive volcanic rock, which would have been ejected from the Colima volcano, located 14 kilometres away, at some time in prehistory.

This really is an incredible discovery because it shows small circular features, which experts have identified as ancient settlements, making it a map of the territorial organisation within a group of indigenous, Pre-Columbian, native settlements in the area.

Julieo Ignacio Martinez de la Rosa, the head of INAH, said the significance and meaning of the stone map was based on a study of the designs and patterns as well as a comparison to similar petroglyphs found in the region. The map contains both orographic and hydrological features.

Well it's a good thing they never invented the wheel...they'd have a heck of a time getting their maps in the glove box of their cars!

Reminds me of Achnabreck Kilmartin Glen in Scotland, the cup and ring are mixed with lines, 5, 000 years old, I always thought it had something to do with the skies, but who knows?

a thought : from James Churchward / Children of Mu . No opinion as to interpretations from Mr. Churchward however he did provide numerous examples of what he called " keystones ". look more like a variety of symbolism similar to "cartouches" from Egypt. One repeated feature was ' bird's heads ' . They were found in Mexico, this chunk of rock is from Mexico and birds show up as pivotal elements of various cultures in Mexico. It looks like a bird's head from the side with an 'eye' just above and slightly back from the 'beak'.
