they could have had the test multiple times in the same year... like at the beginning of the year and work with the kids that needed help... except no one wanted to work with Naruto cause he was the 9 tails... just a thought though

This isn’t a plot hole. As a Jinchuriki, Naruto is seen as the village’s weapon and the village wants to progress him to becoming a Shinobi as fast as possible. He was given an exception to attempt to graduate early multiple times but simply lacked the talent to actually capitalize on this opportunity. The standard Academy curriculum is 5 years, it is said during the Itachi novels that they abolished early graduation, which people like Itachi and Kakashi took advantage of. But Naruto was likely still given an exception based on being a Jinchuriki. Case in point: Gaara is younger than his siblings but graduates alongside them and joins them on a team.

Makes sense when you think about naruto not having much else to do but what he want and he wanted to be a ninja. He would enroll earliest as possible while sasuke had to deal with actual trama. By the time he entered- its naruto 4th time (if he failed 3times). Makes sense to me…

They probably held the test multiple times throughout the year. Kinda like midterms and finals. Which would also explain people who graduated early like Kakashi, and Itachi. They simple must have passed the tests the first time they were offered.

My head cannon is that Naruto tried to challenge the exam 3 times before he passed. I think it fits the character well, as young Naruto was always thinking he was way stronger then he actually was. Also it’s pretty funny to think about naruto going to iruka 3 times saying I’m ready this time I’m not gonna fail, and iruka going Naruto just wait until everyone else takes the exam you might actually pass then. And Naruto refusing to wait and pestering iruka to let him only for him to fail miserably.

Naruto was able to join the academy 3 years earlier than his peers as his character was much stronger and he trained relentlessly in his childhood as he only had 1 goal
