This was state of the art special effects in 1968, but they had been around since the early sixties (same pre-CGI as Fail Safe & Dr Strangelove).
Unfortunately, ‘2001: a Space Odyssey’ was released six months earlier and it redefined special effects until Star Wars was released ten years later.

My dad took us to see ‘2001’ at the Pantages Theater on Hollywood Blvd when it was released. As a 12 year old kid, it ruined all previous movies with special effects. As an adult I can appreciate all of the oldies and just look past the cheesy effects.
Note: Lois Nettleton, the female William Windom, subsequently appeared on every other TV show throughout the 1970s.
Great to see James Hong, accomplished movie and television actor, who also starred in the ‘Chinese Restaurant’ episode of Seinfeld.

Thanks so much for sharing this classic, it brings back memories of many many movies seen at the drive-in theatre. (Our parents forced us to watch ‘How the West Was Won’ at the drive-in. I believe it was a 17 hour movie, and we left early for misbehaving. )

Bamboo Saucer has it all for me. Jets, UFO's Spy Action and special effects. The actors are superb in this as well. They sell the Story. A highly underrated Sci Fi Classic.

Great selections! "The Bamboo Saucer" languished in obscurity for many years and was almost impossible to find. But it's a good film, starring Dan Duryea (his last role) as a tough military officer who heads a special team sent to Red China, to track down a UFO. Competing against him is a Russian team looking for the same thing, with Lois Nettleton playing a scientist. And complicating matters is the Chinese Army, which has been mobilized to secure the saucer and prevent any interference by foreigners. You'll see plenty of other familiar 1960's faces in this film too, such as Britisher Bernard Fox who plays it straight as a metallurgist, and the actor who played Captain Binghampton's orderly on the popular McHale's Navy TV show. Note the inspirational quote at the end of the film by President John F. Kennedy, urging people to use technology for mutual benefit, not mutual destruction. This film is from 1968, exactly 5 years after his assassination.

Miss the old drive-ins.

This is a terrific channel- a great concept and brilliantly realised. Well done.

Hard to believe this film is from the same year Kubrick gave us Odyssey.

Bamboo Saucer was better than I expected, pretty good saucer set and effects.

The best part of this video? The intermission. All of the public messages. Keep your neighbourhood clean and tidy, drive sensibly, look after your health, remember to vote.
If only we were so public spirited today. Oh how I wish I had been an adult in that period. Life was simpler then, sure people had less 'stuff' but I really think people were MUCH happier.
