I was a metal worker. So I use grinders quite a lot. I've seen discs explode, (quite regularly) I've seen people catch loose clothing in them and the grinder has climbed up them and hit them square in the teeth. I've had it happen to me and luckily my tshirt jammed it up just below my neck.

I've seen all kinds of accidents with them. Even a fine disc can chew flesh up VERY quickly.

I just would never use a grinder without anything but 100% respect. As manufacturer intended.

Edit: it's cool to read the working men of the world in agreement with regards to safety, because I know it comes from experience and respect for yourself, your trade and tools. Also, it's nice to have a shared experience and respect with people in the trade from round the globe. All the best from England.

For all of everyone's iron polishing needs. Another idea is to go out and buy a polishing wheel.

WOW...that's almost as good as the polishing wheel that i got from Harbor freight for $1.99 but alot more work.

Putting an angle grinder near a knife like that seems like buying a ticket for the Darwin awards

This feels like a solution to a problem that doesn't exists.

Обожаю таки лайфхаки, когда есть деньги на DeWalt и нет пары долларов на полировальный диск))

Here's a tip, while buying the buffing soap buy a buffing pad at the same time from the same place.

I always wondered what the early days at 3M were like. Thanks for the history lesson.

Для меня это диковато потому, что есть войлочные круги, которые этот эрзац из картона не заменит.

I don't know which is more time consuming - reading the hilarious comments or watching the hilarious video. I applaud the poster for making money on this content. Cool.

So you went over budget on the DeWalt grinder and couldn't afford a polishing disc then?

Years ago a relative owned a vacuum cleaner shop and he had a huge buffer that was used to polish up the aluminum castings on machines he rebuilt and sold. He had several Baldor buffer motors set up with several types of pads, one looked to be just a thick piece of corrugated cardboard but it didn't spin nearly as fast as an angle grinder.
I have four angle grinders, the fastest one says its spins at 16, 000 rpm, the slowest is marked 10, 500 rpm. A buffer motor only spins at around 1, 800 rpm or so. Mine spins an 8" cotton rag wheel on one side and a composite disk on the other.
I could see the homemade cardboard working on a buffer but those type of discs are cheap and likely not worth the trouble to make unless your time is of no value.

Wow!

Not only did I have several old boxes just sitting there, uselessly waiting to be recycled, but I also had several hours without anything to do.

This solved both my problems! What a life saver!

I tried to impress my wife with her new mirror polished clothes iron, but she refused to carry it in her purse as a vanity. The ingratitude!

Polish and a buffing wheel seems to work well also. I build mine out of popsicle sticks and marshmallows !

Having shiny tools is far less important to me than not inflicting bodily harm on myself. I like my eyeballs too much to try this.

I've been a metal fabricator for almost 35 years and a trick I was shown years ago was basically the same thing only on a bench grinder using the grinder with the guard reversed for reverse rotation and buffing compound for sharpening knives. It works great.
