Katana刀 is a general term for Japanese-style single-edged curved sword. Katana is a major category, while tachi and uchigatana are minor categories. Tachi太刀 is written as thick太 katana刀. Tachis are bottom-heavy so cavalrymen can use them with one hand easily. Cavalrymen wear them with the blade facing down and the tip of the scabbard facing up to avoid hitting the horse's belly. The tsuba has a habaki (a blade guard) which keeps the blade floating inside the sheath and prevents it from touching the sheath. Uchigatana打刀 is written as striking打 katana刀. Uchigatana are top-heavy to increase the power of their slashing blows. Uchigatana are used by infantrymen with both hands. Uchigatana was developed in the 12th century, and the nomikuchi shiki uchigatana still exists today. The user can change the katana's center of gravity by replacing the disc guards with different weights. China, Mongolia, and Southeast Asia imported tachis after the 10th century, so in books from that time the tachi太刀 is written as katana刀.

As an author, I have to ask when the “Dummy’s Guide to Ancient Chinese & Japanese Weapons” is coming out? You’ve had to put out enough videos to correct stupid comments, so you have more than enough material to go off of!

I have an old "katana" I bought at an antique fair. The sword seems very old due to the wear, upon doing research, I discovered its actually a Tachi. Its longer, had the clasps for hanging downwards, and a tassle at the end of the hilt. I can't find much more info beyond it belonged to an old collector from Japan. The blade was signed but its been hard to fully decipher even with Google translate. The name of the collector or signature is Johei Okochi, not sure if you know that name. I would really like to find some info on this blade. I see some of your tachis have identical features. Would you be able to identify information about this Tachi if I send you a photo?

Thank you for your informative videos!

Actually, I read it under 2 different historians (I thought it was Rich Stein's Nihonto Index and Norman from Red Kaganate) that the rise and beginning if development of The Uchigatana is way earlier, in 13th Century due to the Mongol Invasions and the need for all-out massed infantry and need for The Samurai to fight on foot rather than horseback...

Handachi was around for quite a while before Katana was born and often time you see katana being shoved into a belt but blade down rather then up

It is also important to note that Tachi was Tachi was not really faced out from use as many people think it was uaed up until 17th century although by early 16th century Uchigatana and Tachi practically blended together inti a one sword only difference being the way its worn, most samurai preferred tachi-koshirae (way of carry) while wearing armor regardless being on horseback or on foot while preferring Uchigatana outside of combat although it doesn't mean Tachi-koshirae wasnt used either - ut all came to individual preferences and situations, although Uchigatana was mostly popular within poorer samurai or straight up common people, it only became popular for samurai in 1590s and 1600s

Is there a practical reason katana are worn blade facing up? I honestly never even knew that

You seem to be very knowledgeable and my own research hasn't been fruitful. You say that somewhere after the 1400s tactics shift to mass infantry away from cavalry. But I am hard pressed to find any mention of shields used at that time especially by samurai. Could you please shed some light on the situation we're shields used en masse and if not, why not?

Do you have any examples of Japanese swords adapted into Western style sabers or Western style officer's swords or katanas fitted with Western style blade guards and grips?

Can you talk about how Koto were different from later period swords, in terms of steel, forging, construction, hardness, durability, flexibility, etc.?

I wanna use the katana edge down so when I do some iaijutsu, I swing a slash from below to upward.

So are the differences purely esthetic? I literally have 0 clue about Japanese swords so I still wouldn't be able to tell the difference

And when the blade of a katana is worn face down it knows to dull itself on the saya, as that is wrong. But when a tachi is worn face down, the blade rightfully, and smartly, knows to retain its sharpness...cuz that's how its suppose to be worn.
