Odachi: The Massive Samurai Sword #shorts

Pulling out this sword with style isn’t easy.
This is Japan’s Odachi sword.
It’s over 1.5 meters long and has a curved blade.
Because of its size, it’s tricky to draw from its scabbard.
Even if you manage to pull it out,
your arms might not be long enough to use it well.
Putting it back into the scabbard is just as challenging.
The Odachi was created by Japanese samurai
as a way to counter long spears used by enemies.
It helped make up for the short reach of smaller weapons.
Its design is somewhat like the long swords
used during China’s Tang Dynasty and was great for fighting cavalry.
But as the katana became more popular,
the Odachi became less useful.
Its massive size made it hard to handle,
especially for shorter warriors.

There were two types of Odachi:
The Odachi
And the Nodachi
Both were very big swords, but one was used differently than the other.
The Nodachi was used on the battlefield, most commonly on horseback to cut down large hordes at high speeds.
The Odachi, was more of a status symbol. If a samurai had nicer armor, bigger swords, more swords, and a lot of rich men by his side, people could immediately see that he was something like a rich Daimyō or other rich samurai.
Another difference between the Odachi and the Nodachi: The Nodachi was slightly shorter than the Odachi, since samurai should be able to draw it from their saya.
