After a doctor is murdered, Lt. Stevenson (Thomas Mitchell) questions the man's girlfriend, Terry Collins (Olivia de Havilland). Sensing that she's keeping a secret, Stevenson confronts Terry in her home, where he meets her identical twin sister, Ruth (also de Havilland). Both women appear exactly alike, sometimes even posing as each other. However, when twin expert Dr. Elliott (Lew Ayres) analyzes the sisters, he finds that one twin is normal, while the other is psychotic -- but which one?

The year was 1946, _The Spiral Staircase_ premiered in February, _The Killers_ in August, _The Dark Mirror_ in October, three classics in a row, all directed by Robert Siodmak. Not a bad track record, eh? Thank you very much for a *perfect* upload!

This is amusingly ironic because of the feud between sisters Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine, which never ended in their lifetimes. de Havilland's acting in this intriguing, beautifully produced, directed - and creepy - film, is superb.

There’s always such a sweet wholesomeness about Lew Ayres. And Thomas Mitchell never fails to give a good performance.

Omg great movie. The technology was not there yet but did an excellent job of making two De havenlend in the same scene. 👍👍👍👍

Clever way to cut Miss de Havilland's wardrobe expenses in half.

I love just about all of Olivia d Haviland's movies. She could play any role. Top 5 of my all-time "CLASSIC " favorite actresses. I had never seen this movie and I loved it like all the others. The Heiress is still my favorite.

Almost playful Freudian stuff but very well crafted and played. Olivia de Haviland, such a wonderful actress. Thanks so much for uploading this film 🙏

Music by the great Dmitri Tonkin. Also used by Hitchcock. Thank you.

This was such a good story. It is so interesting to watch one actress play two personalities as they became more intensely different and recognizable, as they interacted with all the other characters.

Mitchell and de Havilland were both in Gone With The Wind just seven years earlier.

Golly! Golly! Olivia is a really great Actress! By the time the film was ending there's a noticeable difference in beauty between Ruth and Terry.
Isn't it true in real life?

If you look closely at the scenes where De Havilland is both Ruth & Terry, you can see the trick they used- it wasn't a split screen. One will be sharper, clearer, while the other seems just a bit hazy. I read they superimposed the two films, and there is never a way to use the split screen as in other films, as the background never has a convenient post or other structure to splice two films together vertically. Smart for back then, eh? Try 33:33 for a start, then the other scenes are easy to figure out, especially when another person is in one of the films. TY!
