I have a question man. You say there's a bearing on the inside of the XMAXX pinion spur cover? I have a snap on edition with black body with ghost flames, mine doesn't have the bearing or a spot for the bearing to go.

Thank you so much for explaining why that bearing is in the gear cover. I was trying to figure that out.

Gears strip on these vehicles because the motor and spur gear are not solidly mounted together. Most vehicles have the motor on the same mount as the center differential / spur gear which solidly positions them together. There's plastic chassis between the two on the X-Max and XRT. When that chassis flexes the mesh temporarily changes and causes the gears to strip. This is why some people never experience it while there's due. If you're doing a lot of jumping or crash a lot that flex is going to happen a lot more often.
The solution to this is to run mod 1.5 gears. The larger teeth are much more forgiving to that flex and changes in mesh.

I bought my XRT Saturday from another owner and at 6:29 this is exactly what happened to me today. I went out to see what it was like, ran it up/down the street 3 full laps and boom it would not move anymore. Opened and started turning them and the small one slid right off because the grub screw was not tight.

I Definitely would make a trip to the Sanford Hobbytown store one of these days and purchase a Traxxas XRT from you guise. I think I talked to your wife over the phone several months ago about the XRT and she said they have like 4 available. I wished they build another Hobbytown were I live in Melbourne, Fl. We used to have a Hobbytown in Melbourne that was open for like almost 20 years and closed up few years ago, bummer. I bought my Traxxas Xmaxx 6S in December 2016 at that store about few months before Traxxas released the 8S version. To this day I still have the Xmaxx. Now it is a 34lb heavy beast with bunch of aluminum upgrades from Vitavon parts, WFO parts, Pro line menace tires, Hobby Wing 56113 800KV motor and Max 5 esc. I'll be replacing the motor and esc with a Leopard 1300KV motor and the new Hobby Wing Max 5 Gen 2 esc. After that I am done with it and done what I have accomplish what I wanted to put on the truck and will move on to something different such as the Traxxas XRT.

Thanks for the tips, I never knew about the gear cover bearing. I'm putting an 8s Kraton motor in my xmaxx. The d shape pinion hole and c-clip are a gear saver imo.

Just a FYI. I purchased a XRT Ultimate 2 weeks ago and after watching your video I checked it out and to my dismay my bearing in the cover wasn't there. I looked inside the area and found nothing appeared to have fallen in so I contacted Traxxas to find out if I received a defective part. Come to find out they now machine an e clip to the outside of the pinion gear shaft eliminating the need for a bearing on the cover. The cover still has a spot for the bearing but no bearing now.

Great informative Video, you guys must be very successful.
Thank you again for teaching rather than just selling something. Its about the hobby and the Joy it brings us!

While these are all good points, if traxxas didn't use such low quality gears, most gear failures wouldn't be happening. I run mine with a hot racing spur, Robinson racing pinion, and deleted the pins to set my own mesh. No issue after that

Good advice!!! I’ve learned the hard way when I got my XRT with my gears but finally got it all fixed so far! Just remember, you should put in the video, adjust the brakes on the Traxxas link to 40% too

I appreciate this video. I just bought an XRT, used once. I'll have a good idea where to start with looking the truck over and getting it ready to run.

Really useful video, Thanks. Why not you grease the gears to avoid striping using vaseline Petroleum jelly. Also, since you have been all that time in RC, if you have to choose only one RC car / truck / truggy / udr.. which one you choose and which brand! Electric please.

By the way I didn't know there is a bearing under the gear cover for the XRT. I wander if the Xmaxx has the same I never really looked under the gear cover interesting?

Arrma are my favourite tho :) i been in rc racing for round 17years at top level Arrma is no1 these day s anyway tho remove screws on any used new model and put bit of tread lock to be on the safe side pinion grub screw same thing put half inch double sided tape so its over each other under motor very tight start with say 4 layers then if no fit go down to 3 layers of double sided tape if you can on your model.Another thing that has to be done is remove shafts and there is 2 screws inside shaft hidden one holds shafts to diff and other at the end of shaft un screw tread lock an tighten down properly an leave 1 day to dry properly before using very important even on new Arrma s needs be done and clean hub s an bearing at same time so shafts rotate well

Where can I find hardened steel gears for the Xrt in 23 tooth pinion and 46 tooth spur? I would like the high speed gears in the hardened steel!
