All I can think of is Islam Makhachev saying "Who give him black belt. We need to check dis"

He prefaced by saying it depends who you get it from. Thereโ€™s no doubt things have got watered down in the past few years, but it still has real meaning at a good gym.

If you're chasing belts you're in for the wrong reason

You know a guy is a real black belt when his belt is grey and torn to shit.

It gives you a goal to strive for a lot better than just going the gym and rolling

Its like golf handicap, you can lie about it all you want but when you play people can tell if your lying.

Depends on what teacher you get that black belt from

The belt is a symbol of your time and dedication. So if you see a young black belt, watch out.

Its good marketing but a black belt in BJJ is almost always some who is very skilled, Knowledgable and has 10+ years under their belt.

In wrestling, there are no belts, you either have medals and trophies from winning tournaments or you donโ€™t.

In my 20+ years of training BJJ, I found the fastest way to achieve Black Belt status is to have the money to pay for a lot of privates. In my early years I was obsessed training 6, sometimes 7 days weekly for 4-6 hours. I would regularly run into older guys who drove nice cars and were brown or black belts and paid big $$ for regular privates and to a man I would strangle them any time they had they showed for open mat. I quit caring about belts or gis about 10 years ago, bought a goofy rash guard covered in hotdogs and it has more bodies on it than probably >90% of modern black belts.

I knew jujutsu was getting water down back in 2017. I used to train at Tyson Griffinโ€˜s gym (PFmma) and they started having you tally down the amount of times you attended classes so they knew when to give you your next belt or โ€œhave an idea when to give you your next beltโ€ like what? how about just pay attention to my progression?

GgCashh

The guess said it almost perfectly itโ€™s not โ€œhardโ€ to get a black belt. Itโ€™s just time consuming. When I did taekwondo it took 2-3 years to go from white to black belt. And it really is 40% discipline 60% marketing to keep you there.

Used to be that a bjj black belt guaranteed a guy was a killer. I guess thatโ€™s changed

Craig slept in his car for years training three times a day to earn his black belt. Sad to see him talk down on a process he loved for not long ago.
