In my 20+ years of training BJJ, I found the fastest way to achieve Black Belt status is to have the money to pay for a lot of privates. In my early years I was obsessed training 6, sometimes 7 days weekly for 4-6 hours. I would regularly run into older guys who drove nice cars and were brown or black belts and paid big $$ for regular privates and to a man I would strangle them any time they had they showed for open mat. I quit caring about belts or gis about 10 years ago, bought a goofy rash guard covered in hotdogs and it has more bodies on it than probably >90% of modern black belts.

I knew jujutsu was getting water down back in 2017. I used to train at Tyson Griffin‘s gym (PFmma) and they started having you tally down the amount of times you attended classes so they knew when to give you your next belt or “have an idea when to give you your next belt” like what? how about just pay attention to my progression?

The guess said it almost perfectly it’s not “hard” to get a black belt. It’s just time consuming. When I did taekwondo it took 2-3 years to go from white to black belt. And it really is 40% discipline 60% marketing to keep you there.
