It's often joked that Germans have no sense of humor – but how true is the cliché really? Who better to find out than an Australian who lives in Germany – and whose comedic TikToks have garnered over 2 million followers? Euromaxx reporter Brant Dennis spent a day learning from comedian Daniel Stern what makes Germans laugh, how to write a solid stand-up set. At the end of the day, it's Brant's turn to get on stage and make his audience laugh. Mission: Impossible?

Vico von Bülow "Loriot" was one of our greatest comedians, he observed and mirrored the Germans like no other. Humor works differently in other languages and cultures.

Change the title to “How My Boss Made Me Ruin People's Nights in Berlin.”

The problem with english speaking people is that they don't get that jokes are the hardest thing to understand in a other language. So they think Germans lack of humor because they dont get the joke.
The only diffrence to other countrys is germans are not so polite to laugh without understanding it like in other parts of the world...they like to know what the joke was.

It takes 10 thousand hours to master a craft. Most started being funny in school, either as a defence mechanism or the need to be recognized. Those have learned early on how it works, they have been on stage all their lives. We on the other hand have to work hard.

as someone who did standup comedy professionally (and got paid! i frequently emceed at many venues too!) from 1984 through 1992, (incl at Comedy Store & Improvisation, etc in LA also in SF, Palm Springs, elsewhere) ... the 12 laughs per minute is impossible; i found that it is more like 3 to 5 laughs per minute ...once, during a contest in which all comedians only had exactly 7 minutes (not a second more or we were disqualified), i had my act timed to 6:45, allowing 5 to 10 seconds for laughs after jokes, when my 3rd joke (always my most popular) got 1 minute of laughter and applause, i had to think on my feet and cut 45 seconds (at least 3 jokes) from my act!
so as far as you, Brett don't quit your day job, i heard nothing all that funny, or even that much of a joke! but i love what you do anyways, Brett, and sub this channel and many email newsletters frm DW... thumbs up, #65

apply for the assembly line or for street construction and maybe even in a shipyard cause there you can find german reality, hard work, strong opinions, people talking straight.
Might be more to learn than on the funny side and night club life.

Jokes about people confusing Australia with Austria would be really good.

Oh yes, thisweekend Loriots 100th birthday would have been. Watch his "das Bild hängt schief" for example. Or his couple sketches, eg when the man asks how long the boiled egg has been cooked. they are so great.
another famous german comedian was Dieter Halervorden, watch his prisoner buying a bottle of pomes frites. 🤣

Daniel told Brant to focus on German stereotypes but he only went mono. Still, nice try, nice try!

Stand-up comedy is too hard anywhere. I like expat shows (German-bashing etc.) but that is not a good benchmark to jump into conclusions.

British humour can be funny and dry at the same time.
