Crossing the Chain On My Bike - How hard is it to ride? | Bike Experiment

One day while I was riding my bike, I started wondering - What would a bike ride like with the chain crossed over? Would it be difficult to ride?
In theory it would make you have to pedal backwards to propel yourself forward.
Sounds like fun, so I went and built something we could test and try some tricks on.
It turned out to be an interesting experiment - but was it useful for anything?

Street Trial is a mixture of two sports - Bike Trials and Street BMX. It gained popularity on Youtube in recent years through riders like Martyn Ashton, Danny MacAskill, Ali Clarkson, Duncan Shaw, Sean Watson, Fabio Wibmer and John Langlois.
Trials riding is all about riding/hopping over and balancing on obstacles. BMX Street is all about tricks and style. Street Trials combines the two and does tricks over, off and onto obstacles.
Videos like Danny MacAskill's Way Back Home, Imaginate, Inspired Bicycles 2009 or Fabio Wibmer's Fabiolous Escape showcase lots of what Street Trials is about.

Some additional information:

1. There are actually bikes that allow you to pedal forwards and backwards to ride forward, which use an interesting system with two freewheels.


2. My version could work well on some frames, but if you wanted to make a more reliable version, you could use a third cog that reverses the rotation coming from the chain going onto the rear wheel, much like on those backwards steering bikes.


3. A kind viewer pointed out that my front brake disc is backwards in this video. I must have ridden with it like this for two weeks now without noticing, haha. I guess it fits the theme of the experiment.

Solve the engineering challenges by turning the wheel and chainring/axle/pedals round so the chain is on the opposite side of the bike (on a single speed bike) then the freewheel will work so you pedal backwards and the bike goes backwards
