Project Manager vs Scrum Master 🤷‍♀️ What Are The Differences?

The Scrum Master role is often compared to Project Manager by someone who are new to Scrum. Even though it is not an fair comparison, in some cases I have found many people who come from Project Management background think that knowing the differences helps them create a transition path to become a Scrum Master from Project Manager.

This video explains the differences between the two roles. Many Project Manager & Scrum Master comparison on the internet undermines the role of Scrum Master. In comparing these two roles, I involved participants who attend Professional Scrum Master (PSM) class to generate the information about project manager and then I compare the list they've made to the Scrum Master role.

I hope you found this video informative and useful.

Thank you for your continuous support.

As we are entering a new decade, more and more companies are transitioning toward agility -- and the chosen framework to get to agility is often times Scrum. Many Project Managers inside a company are also transitioning to Scrum Master. Many participants in my Professional Scrum Master class wanted a comparison between Project Manager and Scrum Master so they can create a path for transitioning. I made this video as a starting point for those people are are transitioning from Project Manager to Scrum Master. Enjoy.

Thanks for great video. Just one thing, would it be possible to compare PM with PO role? I think it is also good comparison, don't you?

Hi Joshua, Thanks for this. It helped me to know their individual responsibilities.

Can you please also help understand clearly on how the PM's important responsibilities are distributed into scrum team?

Nice video.. 👌👌
I have one question, I am having around 7 years of experience in IT domain as a developer. I am bored with development and want to move into non development role. So should I go for scrum master or Project management course?
Need advice..

I’m not sure I agree with this. Project managers don’t become scrum masters. That’s a very narrow view. Project management is an entire career field in of itself and there’s a big difference between a scrum master roles and a project management career field roles. In fact, project managers have an entire vertical ladder where you can get promoted all the way to a product executive or a project executive. Many times the project managers report directly to the CEO or CIO of the company. Project managers are much further up the chain than a scrum master. Furthermore, a scrum master doesn’t require a whole different set of skills and education. Where is the foundation of a project manager is the PMP certification. Also project managers because they are their own skill set and career field can actually move between banking, construction, aeronautical, and IT industries using the same credentials, so you can see project management should not be compared to a scrum master. They are absolutely two different things. In fact, project managers were often times manage multiple projects with different teams on each project.

Joshua, thank you for teaching us the difference between PM and SM, it was very useful. So, let me do a question please:
A Scrum Master is evaluating a job offer as a Scrum Master, but the recruiter told him that the client wants a Scrum Master, but is going to manage hybrid projects and build projects with Scrum. More details of the responsibilities will be in the interview with the client.
What would you recommend to this person about the job offer before accepting it?
Thank you very much Joshua.🙌😇👍
