Masking Techniques in Luminar 4.2

Masking techniques for any program is a great thing to learn and in theis video I show you some of the techniques I use for various image edits.

Black conceals and white reveals is the motto for masks meaning, if your mask is white the effect or image is visible on your screen and so to remove any areas of it you 'Erase' in Luminar and if you mask is black you 'Paint to reveal' the area(s) you want to show.

Masks are also non destructive and I show you more of this in the next video.

For this one however I have tried to cover the basics on how to use your masks in your imagery by looking at the Brush Mask, the Gradient Mask, the Radial mask and how a combination of these working together can produce the effects you are looking for in your images.

EXPLORE IMAGINE CREATE thats the key. Once you have the idea then it's just the process.

There are many ways to create your images and its fun to try different things with your images.I hope the methods shown in this tutorial are useful to you in creating your own.

Its really worth exploring the software and seeing what it can do and as well as that letting your imagination run free :)
It’s good to think outside the box at times and just experiment with what you can do with your software.

The focus of the tutorial is not the final image but the process involved to get there.

Try the techniques for yourself and see what happens, if you like them use it in the future. But if not, well at least you have learned something that the software can do differently. All’s Good :)

enjoy :)

Amazing how you stretch the capabilities of Luminar 4.2. I opine a good imaginative, and explorative mind is wonderful asset, and that you show what can be achieved is generous. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent video! I didn't know you could add different types of masks to the base image without having to create layers for each. If you haven't already touched on it, how to use the Luminosity mask would be great. Thanks again.

I have a bunch of pictures from a cloudy white gray skies on Kite Day down by the Washington Monument in Washington DC. So, I am replacing the gray skies with blue skies. However, the kites in the sky have white areas and there are flags on tall poles stuck in the ground with white stripes. So, the sky replacement tool doesn't recognize white areas. It paints skies over them. I have no idea how to do neat erases from such small and irregular objects (plus the wind bends them). The only solution I know is to call Luminar as a filter and use the subject masking tool in Photoshop (with the add option) to select the flags and kites and then select the inverse. Is there another approach?
