More than a month after the NEET UG 2024 row erupted over alleged irregularities in the exam, the Supreme Court of India will conduct a hearing on Monday on over 40 petitions demanding the cancellation of the NEET UG exam.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Union Education Ministry have taken a stand against scrapping the exam. In an affidavit filed on Friday, the government stated that it would be unwise to cancel the exam entirely, as there is no proof of large-scale irregularities.
The NTA's affidavit echoed the Education Ministry's position, admitting to irregularities and malpractices in Patna and Godhra but asserting that the overall examination process across 4750 centers in 571 cities was not compromised. The agency argued that canceling the entire exam would be detrimental to the academic careers of the lakhs of students who attempted the exam fairly.
The Ministry of Education emphasized its commitment to protecting the interests of students who took the NEET UG paper honestly. The ministry highlighted that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the reported irregularities, and without proof of a widespread breach of confidentiality, canceling the exam would not be rational.
