That was where they had the free land rushes, several times, the government gave strips of that panhandle shape to anyone who could race to it and claim it. Those who snuck in before the race began were called, "Sooners".

I was born in Oklahoma, raised in Oklahoma and still currently live in this state...but I've only been to the panhandle part of the state once in my 32 years....I'm from south east part of the state...and I hate the Really long drive that it takes to get to the panhandle...ugh...

It's 3 counties I have no idea how you could even get that wrong lol. But here's an actually true cool fact: The Westernmost town in Oklahoma, Kenton, is the only place in OK to use Mountain Time.

The weirdest thing for me about Oklahoma's panhandle is the cartographic anomaly of how New Mexico's N'eastern border with it isn't in-line with the rest of its north-south vertical line eastern border with Texas' "stovepipe" but jumps ahead ~5-10mi. (my dead reckoning) further eastward to meet Ok's border there rather than perfectly in-line with the north-south vertical line border that Tx. and NM share
