Why did Windows Phone fail?

Microsoft also has their app store, but it failed to attract many developers. As Windows mobile phone users were relatively less, the developers did not find it financially rewarding to develop apps on Windows platform. Bad publicity – For iOS and Android users, Microsoft phone was quite like a joke.

Biggest mistake was to kill it all so quickly, basically they gave up. Shame.

Way back then, it was the smoothest, most modern, and innovative mobile OS even iOS couldn't keep up with, and not a source hogger like Android. Pioneer of dark mode, accent colours, and smart voice assistant. The integration with PC was awesome, but the shit was its app store. Google and many big developers unlikely willing to make their apps on Windows store because Google was afraid that it would've been a dominant OS. Fortunately, it's good windows mobile is dead from my perspective. Imagine what would've happened if Microsoft dominate PC and mobile OS

They really need to come back, my lumia was my favourite phone ever. Clean, on the point, no clutter, aesthetic, and very very professional.

I was a big fan of Windows phone from its release until end of support in 2019. I really value my privacy and there were no known hacking tools for the Windows phones. The Nokia Lumia 940 was durable and had a swappable battery, so I always had spare OEM batteries and a charging cradle from Amazon. The bing maps worked great in many countries in offline mode with searchable addresses and POIs without any data connection, just downloaded the map files and traveled. My Lumia went to six continents with me including mainland China, Myanmar and a few other places where I didn't want the regimes snooping into my data. Sure, it wasn't the best st everything but it worked well for me!

1. Lack of apps on windows phone
2. MS would charge $15 for windows phone os to manufacturer while google charge $0 for android thus make it even less popular
3. At that time most phones are tied to carrier contract, big carriers already favored/tied to ios or android

The real reason was because they didn't have youtube.

The biggest mistake you made was not seeing how mobile phones would evolve

In short they failed at hardware and then software as a major software company this was embarrassing.

I wish Windows OS were still operating today, bringing innovation as well as good old Nokia Lumia

Microsoft Phone had many fails, but it is unforgivable how Microsoft gave up on the project. I recognize is easy to say this in 2024 now that technology evolved, but back in 2014 when I was highschooler I broke my Android phone so my mom bought me a Windows phone as an emergency phone until I get an Android again. I was about to say no to my mother, the phone was fast as hell, and in those times it was hard to get a faster/cheaper Android phone. Microsoft failed because they limited too much the access to other apps that weren't in their store, plus the fact that you couldn't download things from the Internet. Apart of that, it was a nice memory for me 😊 I think that back then it should have had more support and get wrong things fixed, it would be now a good competitor to Android

I hope they bring back windows mobile. I used it for years when it was around and loved it. Iphone feels unfinished and the Android experience relies too much on the manufacturer. Windows mobile felt right.

main and the Biggest mistake was, they tried being an ios, closed ecosystem, control over development. . it could have done wonders if they had made it open sourced like android.

I really wish Microsoft would take the windows phone 10 UI and place it as a ROM/seem over android 13. Because personally, I loved Windows phones, but if they could just build it on top just like many other companies have done… I.e. peloton… And creating an android interface would be amazing.

Not to mention, a lot of the developers wouldn't have to rewrite the apps. They may have to make the internals look different as far as the UI to be on par with what Microsoft would like. But it would still all be done written in Java/made for android.

Arrogance is what killed the windows phone. Microsoft believed for 10 years that users wanted a physical keyboard and dismissed the iPhone. Steve Ballmer was a clown. By the time they got their shit together, users and software developers were already so entrenched in apple and andriod that it was too late.

Watching Gates talk about the windows phone on an iPhone. What a future we live in.
