It is rare that I deck will be perfectly square that you can cut perfect 45° on decking boards and have a tight joint. A little tip to for tweaking the cut.

Tip - angles must match or the miter cuts will be different lengths. 1. Get a cheap digital angle finder. 2. Measure the angle. 3. Divide by 2. 4. Cut angle on calibrated miter saw OR cut one board face up and the second board face down to ensure same angle. - pocket holed miters and corner screws can help keep them true over time if you’re anal as I am.

But the length of the cut is different if you don't split the angle in two. You can see that the 45, 5 don't really fit...

I gapped my corner miters. I am surprised folks don't do this.

I run a router on my 45' s with a 1/4 inch round over router bit...hides the off angle and looks better over time

Is there a carpenter out there who doesn't know this already?

it's going to open up anyhow with heat and cold, unless you live in an area with no temperature changes.

Do you not have to leave a gap for a mitre edge?

Wow cut both at a 45 1/2 if not like you showed the long cut of the angle will grow and the heel cut will not line up.

I understand what he means but when he says "cut a little more, " I cant help thinking "cut a little more naterial off."

You are ment to leave a gap for expansion

This works like a charm. Take it a degree over or under 45 and it’ll look perfect

You can also put a color match screw right through the side of one of them after you pilot hole

if you miter your picture frames you need to do more learning before you start installing composite decking

The toes and heels don’t line up in this scenario. Making a miter fit isn’t really about adjusting one side. Seriously though I have a deck company doing guaranteed twice as much work this guy and we would never do this. Also glue your miters as a pro tip

3/16” on all end cuts. You don’t make em tight with wood why would you on composite. Manufacturers all state 1/8-3/16” gap.

Or just use cortex screws and plug it and you'll never see a stupid screw head on expensive material
