One in five Americans are diagnosed with mental illness in any given year. Suicide is the second most common cause of death in the US for youth aged 15–24. Depression kills over a million people a year globally and 50,000 in the US. Drug overdoses kill 70,000 in the USA. The autoimmunity epidemic affects 25–50 million people in the US. What is going on?

The interconnected epidemics of anxiety, chronic illness and substance abuse are, according to Dr. Gabor Maté, normal. But not in the way you might think.

“So much of what we call abnormality in this culture is actually normal responses to an abnormal culture. The abnormality does not reside in the pathology of individuals, but in the very culture that drives people into suffering and dysfunction.”
— Gabor Maté

In The Wisdom of Trauma, we travel alongside bestselling author and Order of Canada recipient Dr. Gabor Maté to explore why Western society is facing such epidemics.

This is a journey alongside a man who has dedicated his life to understanding the connection between illness, addiction, trauma, and society.

“Trauma is not what happens to you.
Trauma is what happens inside you,
as a result of what happens to you.”
— Dr. Gabor Maté

Trauma is the invisible force that shapes our lives. It shapes the way we live, the way we love and the way we make sense of the world. It is the root of our deepest wounds. Dr. Maté gives us a new vision: a trauma-informed society in which parents, teachers, physicians, policy-makers and legal personnel are not concerned with fixing behaviors, making diagnoses, suppressing symptoms and judging, but seek instead to understand the sources from which troubling behaviors and diseases spring in the wounded human soul.

I met this man many years ago through mutual people in an Art show. He said to me that there was something about me as he probably does many times; he then said "I guess you're not ready yet". That was 2008 and I've never forgotten that moment and those words. Fast forward to 2019 and I watched his talks on trauma; I have since healed my relationship with my parents and I no longer take offence to anyones aggressive behaviour towards me. He taught me how to be compassionate and that the answers we seek are found at the core. No he wouldn't remember me, especially from a single moment like that but I'll never forget his words!

Gabor Mate's insights into addiction changed my life dramatically. I had difficulty sustaining my recovery and through recognizing certain experiences in my youth as traumatic I was able to accept, overcome & move forward in life. Too often we minimize things that have happened to us in childhood because we are looking at them through 'adult eyes'.

To deal with trauma, and to come out on the other side of it, has taught me a lot.
I want to help, I know from a deep place where the pain hides in others, because I hid it so long myself.
It is a gift to learn to Love this broken world, through the brokenness of our own heart.🙏💜⛰️

Profound work from Dr Gabor! I once too was so traumatized by my childhood and subsequent bad divorce resulting in me leaving my daughter, being broke with the legal fees and moving away to gain back my peace of mind. I feel so fortunate to be able to chance upon the teaching of Old Tibetan Wisdom and Vipassana Meditation. The Old Tibetan Wisdom, ie Diamond Cutter Wisdom; Planting what we want in life.

Traumatised people wanting to lead traumatised people....the world thrives on trauma and fear these days. Gabor has seen through the veil and he's telling the truth.

I think the understanding and healing of trauma will change humanity massively for the better. It will be a new stage of our emotional and spiritual evolution. So much of human experience is based on unconscious trauma responses. Well done to Mate and all the other trauma therapists and researchers.

Your right about Cancer, my mother had 4 brain tumors and lung cancer, and my dad had bowel cancer, neither did not express anger well, injury isn't just about the mental injury it is a physical injury, it is a mind/body/soul experience. I came to you when I was a teenager back in the 1970's when you were writing your books good luck on your movie, You've been attempting to heal the world ever since then, what this movie is about is your whole life's work.

Dr. Mate is a genius! I never thought anyone would ever understand the pain until I heard him speak. Bless him!

I am impressed of Dr. Gabor Mate understanding the sensitive, vulnerable and fragile side of the trauma that is mostly misunderstood by society and approach it with compassion and nuturing way for us to heal and look at the wound that we don't realize ourselves.

We can't wait to see it! We are a year-old church who is trauma-informed because we see this connection, too. We need each other to reconnect in love in order to heal. Bravo!

Just watched this today and it is amazing! A really precious insight! I really really hope you'd release this for the general public as I can think of many people that will benefit from this knowledge. We need to spread the word!

Wonderful this has been created. 1:12 The lens through which Gabor Maté sees this is the only way to individual and collection healing. Through listening to his perspective I've sharpened that lens, best use of my time for continued learning

This documentary is so important for people to see. This, and other seminal resources such as the book The Body Keeps the Score have made me committed to making a trauma-conscious society a reality!
