Fun fact: to make the film they needed an actual field full of crop, Later they harvested the crop and made some money from selling it. Since the crop in the movie is an actual prop they made money off of selling the prop. A nice touch!

Remember, one big plot of the movie is that Plan A of the Lazarus Project (saving all humans on earth) was never intended. Professor Brand always had Plan B in his mind (fertilized embryos will be sent to a habitable planet to establish a new human colony)

It wasn't a disease in the plants in the movie. The problem was the constant inflow of dust in the atmosphere slowly removing all the available oxygen and leaving only nitrogen which accelerated the oxygen consumption. This resulted in weaker crops not getting enough carbon dioxide from people and the atmosphere because there was a lack of oxygen to breathe. Babies were born and killed quickly by this cause and effect sequence.

Not only the crops but even earth was dying the climate change and sandstorms etc etc which is why they started searching better options for the future generations....

Apart from this, the emotions in the movies are everything, for me this movie is best movie❤

Kipp Thorne answered this question in his recent Star Talk episode. they did due diligence on this with biologist. Apparently there are two types of blight. One Generalized blight that affects all/most crops which are usually not fatal. second is specific blights that only affect certain species but they are so deadly that they could wipe out that entire species of crops. The blight that they have in the movie is a hybrid kind of blight which affect a wide variety of species but also is deadly enough to wipe out those species. When Nolan asked the biologist is this possible, they told that there is no evidence against something like that and no proof that nature will prohibit such a blight. So biologists were good. Its just in the movie they got dealt with an unplayable hand. That is why they have to Leave earth.

actually they don’t intend to send all people to another planet. they just want to make sure that the human population survive. it is said in the movie that the first expedition aims to find another suitable planet for the human race to repopulate again. and as far as I know, the problem with the planet was not the crops specifically but the gravitational pull of the planet and that causes different kind of problems. correct me if im wrong
