Just in case you see this there Dale Spencer an Australian researcher found that when she recorded some lectures and surveyed the students men thought that men and women were talking equally when women spoke around 15% of the time and thought they were speaking more than men when they were speaking 30% of the time. This isn't a peer reviewed study and I don't know if those same perceptions would be present in children of the age you're teaching (though home life and TV will be shaping those views already, if he's watching lots of male dominated TV programmes where there's one girl and four boys for example that could warp perception of equal amounts of talking) but I think it's something to keep in mind when a male student says "girls are talking much more than boys" and you know you're consciously trying to call on boys and girls equally. There's also confirmation bias to consider, the student thinks girls are being called on more so he registers every time a girl is called on and doesn't register when boys are. This isn't to say don't make efforts to keep the conversation equal, rather not to worry if in doing that boys think girls are talking more than they actually are.

I remember my American History teacher did this and I anonymously said that I think it would be more helpful if we had paper notes that we fill out as we go through power points and more paper assignment to follow along with activities, mainly bec during power points and activities we never wrote anything down and it was more harder for me to reference things or let alone how to remember or where to find the information. And he bashed my idea so hard to the class saying “ ah well that’s a lot more work for the both of us” 😂

My students can be vicious with me...I have one who wants me to go back home to Mexico and I'm not Mexican...I was born in VA and I'm mixed with Filipino. I wouldn't dare to ask, "What things should I change about this class?" He and a few other boys would have a field day and it would turn into a bullying session for the teacher.
