How England's Most Barbaric Execution Method Was Finally Banned | The Tower | Absolute History

Every imaginable execution method took place at The Tower of London in its 1000-year-old past. The most grisly of all was live disembowelment. The method was so gross and barbaric that Queen Elizabeth I finally banned the practice. The last time it was used was in 1586 on the conspirators of the Babington Plot. The plot was the work of Francis Walsingham, the father of modern espionage. He was known as The Spymaster.

How one human could treat another in any of these barbaric ways is, incomprehensible. So sad. Many were probably innocent as well.

The practice was actually called being hung (hanged), drawn and quartered. It wasn't "just" dis-embowlement. It was much, much worse.

The cruelty and barbarism of these practises was so out of proportion of the crimes committed. The horror is unimaginable.

People have always been horrible. They still are. Billions of innocent animals are tortured, neglected and massacred every single day. They too feel pain, fear and a desire to live.

Ever wonder if people, including you and me, could watch such torture and not object, not be repulsed ?
Cheering on the deliberate pain and agony inflicted on a condemned prisoner, or anyone else ……
Are we so different of people living in those times ?
By God, I hope so.

Hanging, drawing and quartering continued to be used until the eighteenth century - it certainly did not cease in 1586

Guys a little audio tip, don't play stressful serial killer music through all the dialogue just bc you think it fits the subject matter, for me it made a good portion of this hard to enjoy and silence/sad or dramatic music would have been way better, this isn't some kind of whodunnit like wha

I like the documentary, but do something about the awful music, as it's distracting and ruins the narrative! and almost makes it unbearable to watch.

Absolutely loved the video apart from the volume of the background music. So distracting.

Sir Casement's story is a reminder of how fickle "friends" can be during our time of need.

34:20 "when Laurens returned to the United States in 1786... he rejoined his wife and children" - His wife had died in 1770. Lousy research there.
