On day one of my fire service career, my captain came up to me and said, "If there is any piece of advice I can give to you, it is this, I don't care how many ACLS, PALS, CPR, Basic Pumps, NIMS or whatever courses you sit through your entire career... keep an open mind, always pretend it is your first day because son, I promise you this, you will learn something new each time. I am 30 years on the job and still learning!" Used this advice for 7 years now and every time it has worked!

Excellent!
We have had new guys that needed instructions on how to clean a toilet, nobody laughed, he had the balls to tell us he didn't know how to do something.

When I was interviewing a fire chief a while back he led us to the kitchen and said the kitchen/mess was the heart of the station. That place was the cleanest, most modern, prettiest, largest room in the building. He said some guy came in when it was small and dank and saw how miserable everyone was and instantly went and set up a fundraiser to build them a new one and the very next year the stats for their performance went up 120%. Home is where the hearth is man and so much mroe so for dudes who risk life and limb. I reckon there needs to be a charity that makes sure stations have good kitchens XDXD

Just completed my training today. I'm officially a wildland Firefighter Type 2 awaiting his first call.
Been watching your videos since I started considering this career. Thank you for your service. I hope to touch as many lives as you some day

I got into the Irish fire brigade at age 25 . I got on with a guy that was 30 years in the station . . And the things he told me was amazing u wouldn’t read it from a book . One thing he told me was just stay away from the drink . And I have never drank again . I’m 30 now .

I love Jason's videos, because this is the closest I'll get to seeing what life is like as a first responder. It's interesting to get a small glimpse into this other world. Mad respect to those pursuing it as a career.

Truer words never said! As an old fire captain, it warms the heart to see enthusiasm and determination.

I learned really fast that many things I learned in academy were different in real life. Theory is one thing...

I grew up in a family of seven. Learned to cook from my mother. In the firehouse, it was easy for me...i only knew how to cook in mass quantities, and my boys loved it.

Coffee is a food group, gents. Nuff said.

For those new in the fire service, check your ego at the door. If you can't be humble, you better settle for a different path. Learn from your mistakes, and trust me, learning never stops.

Fire has a life of its own, never assume you have it handled. Always remember that. No two incidents are alike. Keep your eyes and ears open, and look out for your brothers. Panic will kill you. Make your best choices and stick with them.

You'll learn plenty of useful...and funny things. I was taught by an engineer, "pump at 150, bake at 350, don't forget". Some of you salty old bastards might get a chuckle out of that. I sure did.

ME: *eats 10 burgers *
BRO: "That's all you got?! Imma eat 20 burgers!!!"
CHIEF: "...And now we gonna see who paid attention to the "man-choking-on-food" drill..."

Talk to people, ask questions, focus on listening. Be able to right down something new you've learned everyday. I'm not the fastest learner or the best talker but that didn't matter as much as my willpower.

The old-schoolers called me Notebook and always had the nicest things to say about me, that was incredibly encouraging.

Some of the best advice I was given:

*Learning is life, if you stop learning, you're not living.*
