It's a gamble. You're giving up 800 gold worth of stats for 180 gold. If you manage to generate something out of that powerspike (like you did), then it was worth it, if the entire enemy team decided to gank top at that moment, then it wasn't. On your next visit to the shop, provided you made 180 gold before, you would be able to afford the BotRK without selling, so from then onwards you just weakened yourself by selling (if you didn't manage to take advantage of that powerspike).

Alois is a high elo player. He constantly checks his enemy laner's items, level, etc. He can see that he has a full item while his enemy doesn't. He engages because of it. If you sell your doran's to buy a full item, and then farm under turret before your next recall, then it 100% was a bad decision, you just hindered yourself.

Selling D Blade is USUALLY not worth it due to the stats it gives being worth about 800 gold (and you only get 180 for selling, losing 620 gold). HOWEVER, if you're not stomping your opponent and need to gain a slight edge to start your snowball, it IS worth selling the d blade to get your completed item before the enemy and out statcheck them in a fight. Other than this specific situation, there is no reason to sell d blade unless you need to finish your last item.

Oh btw, in case you're wondering, d shield loses value after level 6, so it's more acceptable to sell for an early spike if needed (it provides only a ruby crystal worth of stats, so you're not losing too much).

D blade is very gold efficient. But a finished item is just more item efficient. Its almost always worth getting the item spike over the baseline gold efficiency of a dorans item
