Jeff Salzenstein, Former top 100 ATP Player and USTA High-Performance Coach, reveals a simple secret tip to serve bigger and better. He also shares a common serve mistake made by players all over the world, and how to fix it right away.

Jeff breaks down the myth of the straight arm, which many players make while trying to copy the pros. They initiate the serve motion with the arms, instead of using the shoulders to turn. Therefore, they fall into the down together, up together trap, which disrupts rhythm, tempo, and timing on their serve .

You can avoid this mistake by simply bending your knees and elbow at the same time. This will allow you to sync up the lower and upper body. That is the secret sauce to develop consistency, accuracy, and power on your serve.

Hi Jeff
You are simply asim and doing great work with your instructions. I watched about 10 videos today alone and you simply nail down very fine details of being able to create an excellent serve.
I have been working on my game and particularly my serve for the last 8 months along with also watching Roger's slow motion videos. As you know the game is all about biomechanic.. that is a correct sequence of movement of body parts in a fluid motion. On one of the videos you talked about balance on serve. I have been using basu to improve leg/knee and ankle strength that is helping my serve. I also like to hear your views on using a large mirror while practicing all those components of serve motion.
Keep up the great work and thank you for your time.

Great tips again. I used your elbow-the-enemy concept while instructing recently. People really do pick it up!

This is GREAT! I'm transitioning to a stance from serving pinpoint +50 years. I know I'll be better off in the long run though I've lost a lot of speed while relearning. But since it works for you, Federer, Sampras, and others I'll stick with it. Thanks!

This tip re: bending the elbow earlier on take back is Outstanding. It really works. It looks like what John Isner does to me. I am serving so much better since changed to this technique.
Really great instruction !

Your videos are very clear and informative.

You should try the waiter's serve and flip the tray over (i.e., across the body) using palmar flexion rather than pushing the tray away from the body using pronation (shoulder rotation). Physics in connection with human biomechanics supports this mechanism.

You never hit a serve into the net. Wish I could be automatic like that.

Wow, simply genial! I'll try. Thx Jeff, URN1!

Couldn't agree more. Jeff, do you think you might do a video on how to lean back ....without "arching" the back. It is obvious that you tilt back from the ball and socket joints of the pelvis/legs, and not from the small of your lower as an arrow, with perfect balance and no lower back strain. I suspect a lot of viewers don't know how it's properly done.
