I suffered from gender dysphoria when I was around 11yo for more than 5 years, I didn't like it when my breast started to grow, I was disgusted by my period, and the general idea that my body was changing, I overcame it naturally, and thanks god I didn't have ppl whispering in my ears that I was a boy trapped in my female body. I'm 38 and love my body and myself, I have the chance to know who I am without all this stupidy and more important without butchering my body. I'm deeply sorry for the current generation

As a clinician, I have to say I'm extremely pleased that Jordan has come out so strongly on the gender surgical reassignment issue.
There has been this silencing, of mental health practitioners particularly, on the topic, aligning any level of scrutiny as equal to being 'Non PC' and homophobic! We know that human beings don't get a fully matured brain until around 24-5! and yet these decisions are being made for adolescents! It's also been my clinical experience - in concert with JP's, that the vast majority of these kids decide in their late teens or early to mid 20's that they are homosexual. [ same sex attracted ] but there is a lot of experimentation in the mean time. Some of it is healthy exploration and others is toxic and abusive. These young people are also- in their vulnerability - very prone to attracting a range of predators and also to 'play out' the victim / perpetrator roles. My view is that this is systematised abuse by the medical & colluding psychiatric profession.
For eg; I worked with a number of young women, who had a significant childhood sexual abuse histories, and / or were exposed in early childhood to domestic violence {now called Coercive Control.) Many openly acknowledged they chose to have relations with women "because they felt safer". This is NOT at all the same as naturally being same sex attracted.
This is trauma based avoidant behaviour and denial.
Eg; At one point a patient thought she was lesbian, at another she believed she was bi-sexual because she was still attracted to males. She fluctuated across this self definition several times, moving in and out of relationships. What was notable was that in her relationships with men she was extremely passive and placating and in her relationships with women she was controlling and abusive. Eventually she decided she was straight and then married and had children with a man whom she described as 'not too controlling'.
This is not an uncommon story.
I first encountered a group of trans gender patients while working in a psychiatric facility in the late '80's. One patient was an older person who had transitioned quite late. Born female she had had a lengthy and highly abusive, marriage and had several children. She had come from a a very disordered family. She then had a relationship gay man who had convinced 'her' she was male and to surgically transition - which she did. This person had a complex raft of psychiatric issues - which SHOULD have (ethically ) precluded them from accessing the surgery. Some years after, she was back in hospital with a profound depression, seeking to use the admission to a) separate from that partner, whom she described as 'no different to my husband' (in controlling her physically and psychologically) and B) was seeking Psychiatric support to have her transition surgery reversed. She had a range of issues including other physical illnesses that made that request impossible. Also this was very early in the days of transition surgery and reversals were extremely rare and risky. (I'm not sure that that's any different today - 40 years on!)
Of the remainder of the group who were 'being assessed for approval' - for gender reassignment surgery, whilst receiving adjunct hormonal therapy, ALL but one, had a similar trauma (sexual abuse) history. None of which was being clinically addressed except for some psychotropic medication regimes to 'take the edge off' their PTSD symptoms. As a new graduate I found this enormously confronting and disturbing. These peoples needs for basic multi-systemic assessment and treatment for pre-existing issues was not being met and been superseded by this whole new push towards a surgical 'solution'.


Gender dysphoria is real and far more common than people realise, but playing with gender identity is a very natural part of early childhood. Little boys want to try out their mothers clothes, make up, play with girls dollies. Little girls want to emulate older brothers and play with boys stuff. It is a phase that most get bored with and move on. Today it's spotlit and treated as 'highly predictive' of lifelong genre identity choices. In the main - it isn't. Such confusions and misinterpretations are further 'spread', exponentially, via social media. Most sensible parents don't make a fuss about it, provide a range of gender neutral toys and activities and wait to see how it pans out. [ A very prominent example is Shilo Jolie- Pitt, who it seems played with this issue for a while before evolving into herself naturally ]

We must not forget the influence of social media here - which very young children are accessing and which is normalising gender re-assignment as if this is just as simple as a choice on a MacDonalds menu. There is a real 'contagion here, just as JP identifies, similar to the 'cutting' epidemic [ Deliberate Self Harming ] - primarily amongst adolescent / teen girls (which BTW is still going on).
There are of of course people who are born with genital and chromosomal anomalies and in earlier years many surgical decisions were made that later turned out, , with chromosome testing etc. to be wrong. In my view there are VERY few cases where such surgery would be the correct intervention.
I hope that the very large number of mental health practitioners - of all stripes - will be empowered by JP's emphatic 'calling it like it is' to come out to place their own clinical experience and reservations on the table for this to be addressed clearly.
My concern is that many will stay equally silenced by their fear of litigation once this tide turns... Well done Jordan - keep up the good work.
